Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition has been temporarily removed from sale.

Hi Friends.

Please read this announcement from Trent:

Dear Friends of Baldur's Gate,

We recently removed Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition from sale on Beamdog and the Apple App Store. We've taken this step at our publishing partner's request as we attempt to resolve a number of contractual issues.

Unfortunately, until this matter is resolved, we are unable to release the latest Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition patch or Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition for Android.

This also prevents the launch of Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. I sincerely apologize to the series' fans and promise we are working diligently to remedy the situation.

Regards,
Trent Oster
President, Beamdog & Overhaul Games

Baldursgate.com has additional information in a FAQ. Believe me when I say we're extremely unhappy about this. We didn't have confirmation of this until today, and it is indeed sad news.

We will work through this issue, but we don't know when.

What the hell? I had seen no indication of this whatsoever and I go to the forums there on a daily basis, mostly in the modding section. Weird. Lawyers and contracts--never an easy situation to resolve regardless of which side of the table is yours. Well, I still have my BGEE and am I still making my own tweaks to it. I figured out how to implement a sword of sharpness--very nice.

It will be a shame if BG2EE isn't released, though. I wonder if it would be possible to run BG2 using the BGEE engine, though? There are many codes and effects that have been fixed and should work normally now.....

edit to add: I think I found the reason. This is an older article from 22 May in the Wall Street Journal relating to Atari's ongoing bankruptcy. Atari Aims to Sell Game Assets at July Auctions.

Yep, that seems to be the issue. Atari is doing open auctions on some assets and is doing private sales on others, apparently including BG. Beamdog is issuing "No Comment"s to avoid ANY legal entanglements.

Trent Oster said that these same contractual issues would prevent the release of Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition.

WOW! What a cluster fvck!

Edit: I'm wondering exactly which assets Atari is trying to market privately. Might be an opportunity for an indie or small development house to grab a property and kickstart it.

'tis a shame, really. BGEE is actually pretty good and I am enjoying it even more than the original game because of the improved engine. It would like for BG2EE to be released but I am not going to hold my breath now--I will be surprised if this gets resolved and the game materializes before next March. In the meantime, I will see what I can do--carefully, mind you--about trying to run BG2 on the BGEE engine. I won't hold out much hope for that, either. *shrug*

Latest info is that this may be due to non-payment of royalties due to Atari by Beamdog
