Ever since I had to reformat my harddrive I hadn't the need for a Zip file utility. But with my new build I need the utilization of a Zip File utility in order to upgrade and flash the BIOS of my new motherboard. Any good, solid freeware out there - that you trust doesn't have ad-ware or malware - or is WinZip about it? Thanks.

Aye i think winzip might be your only option, although winrar might be worth checking out. Not sure if it can handle yer BIOS stuff tho. sure someone here'll know better ;)

I think you are rigth, Madman. I did a search and every freware out there comes "packaged" with advertisement. Epox BIOS updates come in Zip format.

WinRAR is pretty good, it allows you to open both zip and rar files, with little to no ads.

The best and most comprehensive zip programme outside of the command line. And it's free under the GPL so no ads.

was never a fan of 7 zip but then i never had any problems with it either, might be worth a shot Albromor

I downloaded this and the compression ratio is significantly better than other compression utilities.
My vote was going to go to winrar, but 7zip is pretty amazing.

Also don't go for winzip, it's under featured and can't unzip many common compressed files, actually I took a look at winzip's website and the number of files it can't uncompress is ridiculous. Apart from that it cost money unless you want the demo version. And 7zip even compresses .zip files (the files winzip uses) better than winzip does.

So, go for 7zip.

WinRAR for sure.

Been using Winzip since 1995 so my vote will go to it... Winrar is good, but Winzip will always be my choice...

UltimateZip is really nice too. It has a prompt to upgrade to pro everytime you open it but you can zip and unzip stuff with your right mouse button menu so you bypass it.

winrar or 7-zip
