Suggested order of plot quests?
 

is there a recommended order in which to do the plotline quests? I've completed Lothering, and I need to go to Redcliffe, Mage Tower, Elves, Dwarves to recruit an army to fight the Blight. What's the suggested order to do them so that I don't get in over my head too quickly?

Im a mage so I am doing the Elves first to get Arcane Warrior, then Redcliff, Mages, dwarves.

Soemtime between those will go and get Shale & do watchers keep.

The game tries to get you to go in this order:

Redcliff>Mages>Urn>Back to Redcliff>Elves>Dwarves

I recommend this order. You'll get more plot choice if you go that way because some of these earlier quests interact with each others. The Elves could be done at any time because it's not too difficult and it's pretty much standalone, but the Dwarven part is the hardest and I really recommend not going before level 12 minimum but would suggest not before level 14 at least.

There seems to be a bug with Arcane Warrior.

After playing once as a Mage and picking it as a specialisation, any other Mage I have created since has got the option to be an Arcane Warrior at level 7 whether I visit the Elves or not.

This does mean I am free to do the Elven quest any time I want.

Having said that, my own preference is to take the Circle of Mages first, whatever the build, just to get the bonuses on offer there.

It's not a bug, it's a feature. Only this time, it really is. Once you unlock a spec, it's open. Which is a good thing for things like Reaver and Blood Mage, that require some pretty off the wall things to get.

If you want Wynne in your party, I would do the mage tower first to minimise the crap spell selections she makes. The dwarves are relatively hard so I would do that later rather than sooner.

The mage tower could be done first because it get you some interesting things and it's not too hard. But you can see the devs wanted you to do it second because the first thing Alistair says is to go to Redcliff and in Redcliff you eventually get sent to the tower.

At Redcliff now, trying to help with the defences "A Village Under Siege".
Dealt with Lloyd, but having problems with the dwarf. I can't persuade/intimidate him. Unless I pay him (and I'm not inclined to as gold is hard to get in this game) I either kill him or leave him alone.
Any suggestions?

Leaving him out of the fight shouldn't make much difference. He joins the knights up near the windmill if you get him, and frankly I don't think that he's needed up there (your party + the knights should be plenty).
