Placing someone on the buddy list removes the need to click on their profile (which requires finding one of their posts - not always easy) when initiating a PM thread. Although i've not used it yet, it probably could've saved me a few hassles in the past.

I know about it, but I usually search for a post to send PM's. I tend to not send many unsolicited PM's anyway.
