I was just wondering... There's quite a number of locked chests in the streets of Neverwinter, and when I try to bash one open with my fighter, there's quite often nothing in it whatsoever. Now I'm wondering...
I haven't taken a thief along so far (still very early on in the game), but if you unlock those chests the proper way, is there still a very big chance there's nothing in it? Or is the fact I'm bashing the chest the reason that nothing is in it afterwards? As I'm wondering why empty chests are locked in the first place... Or are they just meant for a thief to gain experience for unlocking them?

I've found things both ways, Groj. But it can be empty or have a few arrows in it too. Some chests can't be bashed open, at least not by the henchmen I've taken and that includes the half orc Daelan!

There are no scenario specific items in those chests. They are all minor and random treasures as far as I've seen.

I'm a fighter and carried a thief around for a long time early in the game, but I really wanted to carry a magic user. I finally took two levels of rogue. Now I can either pick or bash 99% of the locks, and I can disarm or live through about the same percent of traps.

True, I've already stumbled upon a few of those as well... I just made a note of it to return there later, as there was more unfinished business in that region. Thanks for the answer, though... At least I know now the chest contents are purely random with both locking and bashing.

I will keep it in mind! Right now I'm already very glad I finally reached the third Fighter level. ;)

I took my 4th and 5th lvls as rogue. It didn't slow me down too much and has some nice fringe benefits beyond lock picking and disarming traps, but I know, now, I didn't really need to do it. No complaints though! :D

I've got a 5th level bard, but she took Tomi around for part of the way and switched to Linu in the Beggar's nest, but went back for Tomi to open some of the chests. Not much of any interest was in the ones Linu didn't bash open. However, in the Blacklake district a few houses had good loot in the unbashable chests.

OH! LOLOLOL...something I tried for the heck of it- a tip for you all: Some of the trapped chests, that have scorch marks on the floor in front of them can be 'untrapped' and even disintigrated by using a crossbow on them! LOLOL My bard did it while still a level 4 then 5. It kept her from being hit by the trap. :D

elemental damage from ranged weapons is the best way to take out trapped chests
