87% of 18-24 year old Americans have trouble finding Iraq on a map.

This is truly sad :(

Djinn Raffo 11-20-2002 04:33 PM

What about the 11% cannot find the United States.. Now that is something.

Rokenn 11-20-2002 04:37 PM

This is even worse though:
Only 71 percent of the surveyed Americans could locate on the map the Pacific Ocean, the world's largest body of water. Worldwide, three in 10 of those surveyed could not correctly locate the Pacific Ocean.

Come on though, all those sandy countries look the same. And arent all the oceans connected, wouldn't that make them all one?

I’d be careful of believing those sorts of polls, I reckon most of them are just to fill space.

But as for Uneducated Americans, What really annoy me is those people, who say George Bush Is Dumb and Stupid (and I know a lot of those), now I may not agree with his policies,
But IIRC he has a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, and last I heard you didn’t get those by being stupid.
He have must have had some degree of intelligence to get that and where he is today, even if it was only doing what he was told.

How much do you study geography in american schools?

I've studied geography for ten years, and it's my major in college now too. This is really sickening.

Jeffi0 11-20-2002 05:12 PM

I don't know if I could find Iraq on a map... I could point out where it was in general, but I've had nothing higher than Gr9 geography, and that is just Geography of Canada. However, the 11% that can't find the U.S. on a map are REALLY bad. These articles always make things seem worse than they really are, though.

Redblueflare 11-20-2002 05:13 PM

Give me a break people do you honestly believe that someone couldnt' point out where the Pacific ocean is? We learn that in what the 3rd grade???
