We are having an argument in software design and devlopment about a certain key on all keyboards.
the key is "~" and we want to know how you pronounce it properly. a sound file on how to pronounce it properly would be greatly apreciated.

It's called a tilde. I've heard it pronounced TILL-duh (my choice) or TILL-dee.

Click on the little red speaker symbol next to "Main Entry: til·de"

Hmm... tilde. I've heard it pronounced two ways. til-duh, and tild

Dundee Slaytern 02-08-2004 10:26 PM

Over here, it's most commonly pronounced, till-duh.

Bungleau 02-08-2004 10:27 PM

Give it a hispanic flavor, and I believe you'll hear a third way... til-day.

When I give presentations, I usually refer to it as the squiggle. People know what that means more easily :D

Actually Bungleau, that's one of the few things I recall from my spanish class. And my taught us to pronounce in tielda, or a more simplified phonetic spelling. teel-duh. Or something there-abouts

Illumina Drathiran'ar 02-09-2004 01:36 AM

It's a Squiggly. Though I also pronounce it "Till-duh"

Software design, algorythms use ~ Aka tilde for con't during file compression in a well, compressed folder. You will observe it if you have "show name of file" turned on.
In my most least favorite subject, where logically 2+2 could = (add youR own darn) #. ~ is a true symbol for logic, be it fuzzy, or electrical. However, not to be confused with ~ for ground whilst tracing schematics.

Hmm, Tilde ~.

We here pronounce it "se" ( as in snake in chinese ) as nobody knows the english pronounciation. :D
