I refuse to re-invent the wheel, so:

BGT plain
- use winrar or winace to extract the archive to the bg2 root folder
- unzip the bgt installer 2.1.zip file to the bg2 root folder as well.
- doubleclick installera.bat and wait till it is done. This could take more than an hour on a slow computer.
- When installera.bat is ready doubleclick BGT installer.exe. This program will run in the background and will be ready when you chitin.key file is 678kb (and bgt installer disappears from the taskmanager)
- Run installerb.bat which doesn't take long at all.
- extract the xppatcher.zip and run xppatcher.exe
- select the bgmain.exe file and set the starting experience to 100

Patches
- unzip patch 1.1 to a dummy directory and copy the dialog.tlk file to the bg2 root directory. Then copy the other files to the override directory. overwrite all
- unzip patch 1.2 to the bg2 override directory. overwrite all
- unzip patch 1.3 to a dummy direcotery and copy the dialog.tlk file to the bg2 root directory. Then copy the other files to the override directory. again, overwrite all.
- unzip patch 1.4 to the bg2 override directory. overwrite all
- unzip patch 1.5 to a dummy direcotery and copy the dialog.tlk file to the bg2 root directory. Then copy the other files to the override directory. again, overwrite all.

Regarding the error message you got, this thread has a solution, but you are not going to like it:
