I'm looking to upgrade my internet connection to braodband, not for heavy duty use, a few large-ish email files, general surfing, and a maybe a few older games played online. i was thinking that a 500K connection would do for this, then i could get one for about £15 a month with no download restrictions. But i saw a 1gb version for the same price, but with a 1gb monthly limit, will this last for my needs? I'm also open to others suggetsions if you have any, but i really ouldn't wnat to spend more than £20 a month on it.

A 1Gb limit is pathetic. Your very likely to get into the habit of downloading stuff more casualy than you used to, and its easy to go over a limit that low without realising it. A couple of demos here, a funny video there, and your over. Then, they either cut you off totally, cut your speed to dialup rates, or charge you a fortune for the amount you go overlimit.

Whereas, with the 512K, you dont have to worry about that and its not going to be that much slower except for large downloads. But, be careful you aren't just missing the download restriction in the fine print, unlimited broadband isnt that common.

www.adslguide.org.uk is probably the best place to look for current prices and ISP ratings.

For your needs I think http://www.freedom2surf.net would be a pretty decent choice of ISP, the £19.99 Connect Home User package looks pretty decent.

Good luck with it.

Yeah I have Pipex - ok that was £23 a month for 512/256 but it was definitely unlimited and always performed at the maximum speed, so it's very good.

And I agree that a 1GB per month limit is pathetic - you'll reach that in no time, it's even possible to reach it in a single day.

I wouldn't go for any download-limited service, unless the limit was at least 20GB per month.
