Re-arranging party members?

How do I re-arrange the order of party members so that my character, a mage, isn't at the front?

Play around with the buttons below the portraits. One of them is a "select all" button and one of them is a "hold position" button. Using these buttons will improve the party movement experience. To change who is on point, just select that characters portrait and move the party. The character selected will take point.

OK then, it's not like Baldur's Gate where I could change the relative positions of the party characters?

In BG you "clicked and dragged" to change the top down order of the portraits. I don't know if that works in DAO. Give it a try!

Or are you talking about party formation? The only formation I know of is the diamond default formation.

You can change the order of characters from your camp, whenever you "adventure forth" and choose your characters. It doesn't have the charming affect that it did in BG though.

If you mean formation - that's definitely something that was a backwards step from BG, I think. I've only just started playing myself recently and are still coming to grips with trying to get the characters to do exactly what I want.

You can use the H key (or the little circle next to the select all circle) which is located under the bottom character's display picture to change where you want characters to stand. Shame that the cut-scenes in the game have a tendency to spoil alot of tactical planning.
I still haven't sussed out the tactical options fully as yet, however.

The only way to get yourself off point is to select the character that you want at point and move the party that way. It will not work in cutscenes, which is still my biggest gripe with the game. Especially since I could have scripted the cutscenes better. It makes me a sad bard to think about that.

If you've played 4th ed. D&D lately, then you'll know that D&D has gone the horrid way of the cut-scene, too.

YOU WILL TAKE YOUR BOXED TEXT AND YOU WILL LIKE IT!!

I haven't played 4th Ed AD&D, but can certainly imagine the kind of dreaded influence you're talking about. Consolitis and MMO-ification for the win!

Speaking of text boxes - I've been wondering why the subtitles appear at the top of the screen too.
Seems like a real oddity if they're going for a cinematic approach since I can't exactly remember when the last time I saw a film with subtitles on the top of the screen was. :)
I guess the dialogue options take first preference for placement.

Yeah, I find that it's easier to keep track of what you want to say if you couldn't hear, or understand what the NPC in dialog is saying. My 5.1 surround sound is worthless, since it's not supported in game. :(
