<span style="color: lightblue">"Extra stuff" being bugs, spyware, and security holes incurred by it's being partly IE. It also doesn't help that it's based on an older version of Firefox, the updates to which included security fixes - but that is a relatively minor concern since there haven't been any reported exploits of them in the wild. Netscape is not currently as good as Firefox, and - from what it has shown in recent years - possibly never will be.
For me, the best part of Firefox is the extensions. I currently use Adblock, Download Statusbar, EMButtons, Greasemonkey, keyconfig, KeywordSelection, Tab Mix, and View Background Plus, although at one point I had almost 50 of the things. The regular updates are good, too - 1.1 is expected out later this year (second alpha in the next few days/weeks), and the builds that are to become it already have some major improvements (Opera-esque instant-back, revamped preferences window, easier extension install/uninstall, simplifying of some startup code/config files (possibly also improving startup speed), more advanced tab handling out-of-the-box...), and there's a fair bit more to come (save webpage as PNG or PDF). And ofcourse the focus on interoperability (both with the way the web is going and the way the web is now).

Anyway, if you want something faster possibly try an optimized build of Firefox (
www.moox.org has some popular ones), or Opera (which out of Firefox and Opera is faster at rendering pages is hotly debated, and seems to vary alot depending on alot of things - the give-us-money-or-we'll-give-you-even-more-ads is real annoying though). Or, if you want something
realy fast, but don't mind getting fairly basic pages, Google for 'Dillo' - not sure if it runs on Windows, though.
EDIT: Ok, I just downloaded and tried dillo for myself... it is extremely fast. Just don't use it for javascript-heavy pages (eg, Ironworks uses Javascript excessively), or if you want to see pages which have been designed as works of art rather than as a way of delivering information (no CSS support). But Dillo is the fastest browser I have ever come across - quite possibly even better than Lynx!
