I've looked all over the place including the manual for what 1d6 or 1d8 means. I'ts used in things like 1d4 rounds or 2d4 points of charisma. My only guess that 2d6 means if it hits one or two on a six sided di. Please tell me if I'm right or what it actually means.

Actually 1d6 is one six sided dice(1-6), 2d6 is two six sided dice (2-12)and so on.
1d8= 1-8, 2d12 =2-24, ect.

In pen and paper AD&D you use dice to generate numbers. There are lots of diffent dice, each with a different amount of sides. The d# method is shorthand for the number of sides the dice has. Eg d6 = a six sided dice(rolls 1 to 6), d8=an eight sided dice(1 to , d12=a twelve sided dice (1 to 12).
The number before the d is how many of that type of dice you roll.
Eg 3d6 would mean you roll 3 6 sided dice and add them together (giving you a number from 3 to 1

2d4 would mean you roll to four sided dice and add them together (2 to

Once you get the hang of it its pretty easy.

Hmm! Sorry about the emoticons I didnt realise and 8 plus a ) would give a shades emoticon. Whereever you see that is supposed to be an 8

So if I had a di with 2d8 then 9 would be the most likely number to hit?

omegadawn 12-06-2000 02:06 AM

yes 1d6=1-6 points of damage on a successful hit. a long sword does 1d8( 1-8 ) points of damage by default.

1d6 where

1 = no of dice used
6 = type of dice used (ie. this is a normal dice, with 6 sides)

2d8 would be

2 = no of dice used
8 = type of dice used (this is an 8-sided dice with the number set from 1-

so you would have a range between 2-16 with the 2d8.

Note: to find average damage, multiply by the number of dice by the average score for that die. Minimum is, of course, number times minimum score. Maximum should be self explanatory.

die / average score
d4 / 2.5
d6 / 3.5
d8 / 4.5
d10 / 5.5

i.e. 10d6 = 10 * 3.5 = 35

Yes, if I remember my probability right, the most commonly occurring number on a 2d8 would be 9.

(Number)/(# of ways to roll it)
2/1,3/2,4/3,5/4,6/5,7/6,8/7,9/8,10/7,11/6,12/5
