Its too bad they didn't include spell specialization from the Tome of Magic.

Anyways, for all you magic users out there, which class, the Mage (including specialists and/or Wild) or Sorceror would merit a higher degree of challenge?

I ask because I want to solo. I want to get everyone's opinion on whether it is more difficult to play a Sorceror through to the end of ToB then a mage type due to the More Casting/Reduced Spells Vs. Memorization/Versatility argument?

I kind of want to avoid munchkinizing too, and my decision has come down to Wild Mage or Sorcerer, and I may write a guide, so I want opinions on which of the two would be the most fun while avoiding any powergaming.

Thanks!

I really REALLY want to try to solo
a mage type also. I have never tried
a sorcerer, but I think it would be
challenging to try to pick the "right"
spells per level. I also tried a wild
mage and I didn't like him, but maybe
I didn't give him a fair shake. I like
conjurers but there are a few spells that
you miss out on from the Divination school
like: Identify, Clairvoyance, True Sight
so I don't know about soloing that class.

If you don't want to powergame then go with the Wild Mage.
I just love the unexpected results. (Even though I think they
should appear more ofter http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif ) The only difference is
really the number of spells the sorcerer gets. Not fair.http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/nono.gif

I'm running a sorcerer and vampire killer through as a combo
right now. Even now after playing the game so long, it's
hardly a challenge. I guess I need to drop the fighter and
try it solo again.

Good luck.

You want a CHALLENGE? http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif Go for Wild Mage then, Sorcerers are used by powergamers to solo.

Everyone says Sorcs are for powergamers, but in reality, soloing, a wizard of any type will need to rest a lot, and can reset spells right? So having a larger spell selection that can be tailored to the situation may be actually more powerful...?

Man this is a hard decision. I like both types, and have fun with both. Its so hard to decide which though. Does anyone have any concrete reasons why the Sorc is considered more of a powergamer?

Argh, back to work...

Dude, even when you are a Mage, it is rare to have more than 5 types of spells in your spell slots, unless you enjoy being a Jack of all Trades and get plenty of spells but only being able to cast them once or twice each.

The beauty of the Sorcerer is that you will always have that spell, until you exhuast that particular spell level. You want 6 Breaches? A Sorcerer can do that, so can a Mage, but you see, the Mage needs to sacrifice his/her spell slots to do that, the Sorcerer does not. Therefore, the Sorcerer is more flexible in his usage of spells, the Mage is more flexible in his selection, but the Mage will never rival the Sorcerer in terms of firepower.

Sureeee, you can purely memorise offensive spells, but that would mean having no defensive spells. The Sorcerer however, can choose halfway through the battle to cast something else.

To be an effective Sorcerer though, you need to know what you will use.

If you are still unsure on spell selection though, I highly recommend that you stick to a Mage first. Sorcerers are for those who are very very comfortable with spell usage already.

If you are going to play a sorceror (especially if you're soloing him/her) write down the spells at each level you think you'll use. And the ones you NEED-typically True sight, breach, minor spell turning, spell shield, spell immunity, secret word, stone skin and ONE type of armour.

Then work out what order you are going to get the spells-the must haves first.

If you don't I can virtually guarantee you'll come up against someone you won't be able to hurt because you don't have the right spell availanle and you don't want to be relying on scrolls all the time.

Incidently you only need two spells for anti spell attacks-secret word and ruby ray of reversal.

Also be careful of how many of a certain type of spell you select-you probably dont need all the sequencers, contingencies etc.

You only need a couple of summon spells and you certianly don't need more than a few armour spells, if you get one of each at each level you'll limit your spell selection dramatically and you don't want that.

And whatever you do get Mordenkanen's sword-its great.

Have fun http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

So to cut to the cheese (hehe) which class, Wild Mage or Sorcerer, can be assigned a greater "Solo Difficulty Level", and is this TOTALLY subjective to the player, or is there some way to establish guidelines that make one or the other more... munchkinish/power-gamerish?

Just curious.

Is a powergamer someone who just kills anything in a few hits and completes the game as fast as possible?
