ive got a fighter/mage who rules, he hasn't got thee greatest magic, but thats only his backup, like he'll cast haste and stuff on himself and run in and attack, then kill them off with chromatic orb.
but i also want to try the sorcereor and im not that far from the beginning so it wouldnt be too much trouble to start again.
What do you think i should do???

(i could do the multiplayer trick and have my fighter mage And a sorceror...)

I'm having tons of fun with my solo sorcerer!!!!!

Morgan_Corbesant 11-13-2001 11:06 PM

im soloing with an elven sorceror, and it is by far the most fun that ive had. i like to bring a fighter or thief in briefly, just as a backup, but just for a battle or so. or ill bring in npc's, so i can get some more side quests. all in all though, its fun to solo, especially with a sorceror. i did it with a human fighter, dualed to a mage at level nine, just for the hitpoint, weapon, and thaco bonuses. i woulda done it with a kensai, but that is kinda cliche right now, and they cant use shields, gauntlets, or helmets, so i think they suck for that reason. anyway, im rambling again, but ill just say that sorcerors ROCK!!!!!!

Now the solo sorcerer must be getting cliche, 'cuz I'm doing one too. And yes, you get a lot of satifaction holding monsters using as few spells as possible, much more than you get being tank fighter. I for one am quickly learning the value of Melf's Minute Meteors, and learning to make them last (heh).

Hmmm... well I'm not sure what you should choose since my experience with both is fairly limited although both of them are very interesting to me right now. Let's put it this way.

Sorcerors are the ultimate in magical power. They have no equals. A sorceror has the spell you want when you want it (no more, "Aw, crap! Forgot to memorize my new spells and now I'm dead!") They have slightly less spells than the standard mage but I've found that there are only 2 or 3 a level that you really use a lot. If you want magical power, you've got it. And then, there IS Melf's Minute Meteors....

Fighter/Mages are the best of both worlds. They can get up close and take or they can hang back as mages who handle themselves VERY well when the fight comes to them. They hack-and-slash, they blast opponents. They have very interesting possibilities. They don't have overwhelming power in either ability though, due to the slower advancement.

Sorceror's can't handle a fight close-up, but will you really need to. Fighter/Mages handle almost any situation (especially once they get Elven Chainmail :D ). Sorcerors are very specialized, powerful characters. Fighter/Mages are more well-rounded and still powerful, but they advance half as fast.

I think either class would be a good choice, however, I would recommend Fighter/Mage so you can get to use some of the more interesting pieces of equipment that you may miss out on if you played a sorceror. Play the sorceror another time through. OR just start a multiplayer game with BOTH of them.

I hope I didn't just confuse you ;)

Frankly, in every game, online or offline, I have been always a warrior type. So in BG series. And I am happy with it. I never dualed them since I like the "pure" class much more, not the crossbreeds. I do use the kits though, they give the flexibility.

I have found the Bberserker to be a good class. He has the power to beat things into little chunks, when in Berserk state, he is immune to many high lvl spells. Smack on Holy Might and he is pretty mean. Add on that the Boots of Speed or Haste or Potion of Quickness and tadaa! Mean dude. I haven't really played "solo" as with one char, since that way I miss 2/3rd of the fun of game due to the missed quests. So from that point of view, I have a party. However, I like to keep him in a good shape so I always equip him with the best possible gear combined. If others die, they can be ressed in most cases. If he dies, game is over (which in my eyes is stupid, since the rest of the party is alive and could easily res him in turn). What I mean by "solo" here is that in many cases, if not most, when I know or feel that I am about to get into big fight, I usually leave the party behind in defensive position and go ahead with just my main char. Ah the fights he has had heheh..

I actually am a person who uses magic a little and relies on the strength of arms and weapons. My casters use slings much more then spells, and when they use spells, they in most cases use dispell type of spells to get the protections off of the target, and healing spells. I have had mainly 2 casters in my party - Aerie and Jaheira. From my memorized spells, you would find really very few offensive spells, if any at all. Most are defensive and healing types. I have never seen really the need to go heavy on magic in BG's, the good ole melee and ranged attacks work out quite nicely as well. You just have to have good equipment and keep the main tanks alive.

My main char has some main stats, like STR, DEX, CON at 19, because I brought him over from BG1, where I used the books. I think there are some such books in BG2 too, but guess I have missed them (save the DEX one, but forgot where I got it).. Since I played the game at first through too fast, then now, when I started it again, I imported him again. Definately it has made some things easier due to the bonuses he got from Bhaal's Tears (I did the good way), so he now fights even more. He wasn't maxed out though, just lvl 14, so I will see now how far I can take him. As for all melee and little magic, well, in some cases it's trickier, in some easier. But it's doable and I like it more, rather then mess with these spells and things.

Also I have tried with the rogue type of char, forgot which kit I used, but he was cool. I got his Stealth as high as I could, more then other skills. With good daggers or short swords, with good equipment and Boots of Speed, you can do surprizingly much with a rogue. Backstabbing many if not most foes, set the traps and snares. Boots will get you out of the harm's way, get away and Hide in Shadows. Cloak of Non-Detection is handy, coupled later with the Cloak of Mirroring, once you get it. Quite fun, I should do it again and stack up on the Potion of Explosions or Potion of Fiery Burning - nothing more fun then to sneak up the ambush set for you, then nuking them and hiding, before they even found out whay hit them. Then backstabbing the rest of the rabble or nuking again. With a good bow and best arrows you can use on top of it, such a char is really something to behold. Imoen was my primary scout char in BG1 you know :). She wrecked real havoc on enemys like this..

i usually play similar to Whailor, using a pure fighter and getting him to do all the work, with little magical support. That's what all my other times through have been. I've just started soloing with a mage/thief though and that's tough. When you can't beat mephits in hand to hand one on one you know you're in for a rough ride. I'm sure I'm going to learn a lot though, if I don't get frustrated and give up that is!!! I 've had to relearn how to play the game and use a lot more strategy.

i just started soloing with a jester, and its pretty hard, but alot of fun, and probably one of the hardest solo classes in the game. a druid is probably pretty hard too. to tell you the truth i was thinking about maybe having 2 characters, a JESTER AND ADRUID, BUT THATS KIND OF CHEATING ISNT IT? sorry about that my caps lock button has a mind of its own. im not very far with my jester yet, but well have to see how it goes, its fun so far
