i'm in vongoethe's lair in amkethran, and have come upon a non-pickable locked door. you have to follow a series of trapped doors and ladders to get to this door, but it seems to require a key to open; where should i look for the key?

But as this is only one of the(I think three) possible ways to get inside Balthasar's monastry, Link is right: You do not really need it.

OK Balthasar is a lich....well isnt he a character in Romeo and Juliet??

He's Romeo's servant IIRC. He's accompanying him to Juliet's grave.

Balthasar is NOT a Lich, at least not in the BG series. And there's also one of the three wise appearing at Christ's birth with the same name.
