Ok, so I've received the impression that this is bad, but what is it? I looked at the Rules and Regs page, but didn't see anything. Just curious.

Rude behaviour towards other members is known as Flaming and Trolling..

Er, yes. What he said. And any mention of the game 'ping pong' is considered trolling, too :D

I'm sure the mods will stop by and provide more thorough definitions, but the short versions would be...

Flaming - making personal attacks.

Trolling - making rude, inflammatory posts for the express purpose of causing trouble.

Ping Pong? That's more like spam but may include the above.

Actually, Ronn's explanation is pretty comprehensive. Heed his words of wisdom ;)

LOL Ping Pong :D

Thanks to the mods there isn't much flaming/trolling on these boards. But sometimes these trolls come out of nowhere and infiltrate IW...

Well, Ronn did cover it. Trolls usually want to toss some controversial bit of rubbish into a thread and run off to watch the mess they've created as others try to answer them. Some do it quite blatantly like posting nasty flames about another person, while others drop subtle things into a thread or pretend to be someone they aren't in order to keep members from immediately shouting "Troll!". We had a few who posted pornography, claiming they were innocent teens or kids who'd been abused.....got sympathetic replies and laughed themselves hoarse, I'm sure.

At any rate, all they want is to stir things up and sit back and laugh.

Ronn pretty much covered it, but think of trolling as fishing...as in fishing for a reaction, trying to get a rise out of somebody.

Flaming is similar, usually harsh language, discourtesy and so on, but it is possible to "flame" without being rude. Usually this occurs when somebody feels it's necessary to dress someone down for past transgressions.
