How do you read if it stands
a sword does 1d8 damage,or 2d4 damage? ------------------ So says the Lord of Terror, and so it is written. |
Me thinks 1d8 means a sword that will do damage from 1 (minimum) to 8 (maximum), depending on what the 8-sided dice generates in the game. As for 2d4, that means the damage being dealt is determined by 2 dices, each with a value from 1 to 4. So the minimum damage that a 2d4 sword can deal out is 2 and the max is at 8.

It means one octogonal dice...i.e. a dice with eight sides.
Menaning that if a sword does 1d8 damage, the game imaginarily rolls a die with eight sides, and the number it falls on (1-8) is the number of hitpoints damage you do. So 2d4 means rolling two dice of four sides each. It comes from the pen and paper game Dungeons and Dragons, where damage and a load of other stuff is determined by rolling dice. |
2D4 has the same max damage, higher min damage and a better chance of higher damage. This was in BG1 as well.
