<span style="color: lightblue">It's been a long road, but the end is worth it. The greatest browser in existance has hit Version One. For the uninitiated, Firefox is an alternative web browser to Internet Explorer (and better in every single way), featuring tabbed browsing, extensions & themes, and easy customisation to suit your needs. It is a derivitive of the Mozilla Suite, which offers a 'lite', non-bloated, browsing experience. It is based ont he powerful Gecko rendering engine, making it one of the most standards compliant browsers in existance (the only real competition in this regard being KHTML (Konquerer, Safari, et al), and Opera) The learning curve for users of any other browser, especially internet explorer, is nowhere as steep as many other browsers. Help topple the monopoly of a broken, buggy, browser, and help Firefox to achieve it's goal of 10% market share by the end of next year. CNN Article, Firefox 1.0.

Awesome hope the debian package is finished soon

Well, I always figured the main reason why so many leaks in IE are discovered is because hackers try *a lot* harder to find any with IE than they would with Opera or Firefox - for real. ;) Still doesn't mean IE was a lot less safe than the other two upon creation, though.
With that in mind however Firefox is certainly a fantastic alternative, not in the least because of all the nifty extra features and downloadable extensions. |
<span style="color: lightblue">So the most used product is instantly less secure? Apache is more used than IIS (by almost as much as IE is more used than anything else), and yet it has had only one major worm in it's lifetime, while IIS in it's shorter lifetime has had many. No, alot of the reason why IE is less secure is because it is integrated so tightly into Windows. This can make an otherwise negligible bug become a critical security flaw, because it can affect the core of your system.

LOL, knew you were going to deny it either way. Who was saying anything about the most used product? How about the least popular browser? As you have to admit that people are obviously prejudiced against IE because of its inevitable Microsoft association... IE could still be the best browser out there, and people would still go with alternatives instead. It's only human nature. ;)
Either way, I couldn't care less about going into a debate with someone who obviously spends at least 50 times more time worrying about these things than I do; so I'll just leave this thread for what it is. |
I'm already using Firefox. I got a window yesterday about this. Will this just upgrade my current version of Firefox or what?

Grojlach - I have to say, IE is the pits of a browser. Microsoft haven't bothered to upgrade it in any meaningful way for the last four years whilst all its competitors have made leaps and bounds forward in technology. I'm an Opera man myself, Firefox always seemed inferior to me, but either is vastly superior to Internet Explorer. You'll return to IE on somebody elses computer and feel so constricted...
And Opera and Firefox are more secure because they take conscious decisions to keep it that way - especially not using ActiveX which is a favourite way to exploit IE. It's just a fact of life I'm afraid....there are security holes that are simply indefinitely not fixed in Internet Explorer. In Opera, when a (rare) security hole is discovered, a fix is up within 24 hours and I understand that the Firefox community usually respond in a similar time-frame. The entire attitude of the Opera and Firefox communities is completely different to Microsoft with regards to security. And happy first birthday Firefox!
