@ Questions.First does the familiar learn new spells as the game progresses.If so how.And what would be the best party.My current caracter is a plain old mage.I am thinking of Me,Minsc(and boo),Jeriah,keldorn,valgyer,Nalia9till i get imoen.

1) Nope, your familiar won't gain any level/abilities in BG2-SOA. You get what you see.

2) As for your party, you have 2 rangers (Minsc [yes, and BOO], and Valygar), might want to switch one of them for some one else, a cleric like Aerie perhaps? The party already have enough tanks, I think it will be more beneficial to have more spell caster.

oh one more question. If my familiar doesnt learn new spells what is the use of having him.The extra hitpoint or two

Yup, extra hitpoint is the major reason, although some familiars can be "ok" scouts while others have a spell or two to aid you. Most (if not all) of the time my familiars stays in my backpack.
