Why doesn't anyone tell you that there is a time limit in the Underdark?!?!?!? I get halfway through the mind flayer quest for the matron mother and Phere shows up and dimes me out as a surfacer....Is there anywhere I can go from here or am I screwed and have to fight my way through the Drow City to continue the storyline.????

Since you only need one item from the required creatures...I'd go back to the auto save upon entering the Mind Flayer's Lair, and report back to Phaere straight away (time is obviously running out). You can always return and complete the Mind Flayer's Lair after finishing Ust Natha ;) .

You should check your journal. IIRC, it says you have a three day limit to do it...
