My favorite so far.
This Chandra image of the supermassive black hole at the Milky Way's center, a.k.a. Sagittarius A* or Sgr A*, was made from the longest X-ray exposure of that region to date. In addition to Sgr A* more than two thousand other X-ray sources were detected in the region, making this one of the richest fields ever observed.

I like it.

But sometimes you can't express the beauty of nature in words...

Edit: Do you have more of these pics? Or any URLs?

Gotta tell ya, LK... I like it, and when I read your description, I realized just how little I know about astronomy...

I've updated it for my new wallpaper, and I'm going to Google for what a Chandra image is, just so I can impress my friends. Before they stop being my friends, that is... :D

On a side note, I read earlier this week about a contest to pick the most appealing picture of the sun from some 12 entries. It was from one of the sites you link pictures from, but I'll be danged if I can remember which one. I still have the green filtered sun on my Linux box...

I can't take credit for the descriptional text. I usually just paste it from the caption under the pic where I get it, if its more than a simple title. I really am not much of an asronomer, just an enthusiast. :D

Really? The text came off so simply that I thought you had just added it in from your own knowledge. Honestly.

Well, I now know that a Chandra image is one taken from the Chandra observatory, where they can take pictures that use X-ray technology to render the image in some way that I still don't understand.

What it now means to me is that Chandra images (a) were taken in this one place, and (b) make pretty colors

:thumbsup"
