<font color="skyblue">Every year, United Way comes through and tried to get corporations to pledge a certain amount of money to their charity. This money is not given by one-time donations. They prefer you have a deduction from your check each pay period. I was talking to some people, and mentioned that I do alot of community service, donate to the church to help the member families that cannot afford food get it, and various other things...and so I would assume not to have this pay-deduction on the account that I feel like I do my part, and I cannot really lose more money to another association, unless I decreased my efforts in the afore-mentioned items I am currently engaged in.

I was warned that I would be looked down upon, and shunned by my negligence to contribute to the United Way.

I hear rumor that on the golf course...the executives from large corporations make bets on how much they can get their employees to pay, and I also hear rumor that the President of each company gets a personal bonus from United Way by meeting certain goals.
These are pure rumor, however, not based on fact...yet why do the Executives push for United Way more than any other charity???

They are not the best. The JDRF(Juvinile Diabetes Research Foundation) gives 85% of the earnings toward the actual research. Coming in at #2 is the National Cancer Society at 80%. Where does United Way come in on the chart for actual money contributed to the cause???</font>

I'm know the United Way is a great organization, but forced, or "recommended", donations are wrong and against the idea of charity.

My wife is in a similar situation at her job. She was put in charge (after her boss decided he didn't want to deal with the hassle) of passing out payroll deduction forms, going to the meetings, and other jobs associated with the "combined campaign". Even though we've always given locally, she now feels obligated to give more than we used to through payroll deduction. At one of the meetings, someone politely said, "if those leading this effort don't give how can we expect others to." Meaning, give more than anyone else where you work. Probably another reason her boss, who makes twice what she does, didn't want to be bothered.

It's good money to a good cause, but it's an uncomfortable situation and I don't think it's what the United Way wants, or intended.

This, IMO, is just plain wrong. Charitable contributions should come from the heart, and not from corporate coersion, especially through one's paycheck. Many people are beleagered enough just to make ends meet, and can ill afford to do much more than support their churches or personal organizations.

If I were to find out that I was being bullied at work to give to United Way because my boss was getting kickbacks from that organization, they'd have a wild werecat on their hands! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no.../angryfire.gif

Its the same way in the military. If you dont give money to the "Navy Relief Fund" (or whatever service you were in I was Marines) your branded as a dickhead and given first choice on any crap job that comes along. I went ahead and donated lol. Hmmm but I still got crap work wonder whats up with that?

I have the same problem where I work.

We are under a fair amount of pressure to do the 'ol payroll deduction thing.

I absolutly refuse to donate. I go to work to make money, not give it away. It is also my form of protest for what I feel is solicitation on the jobsite.

No seriously, I don't donate to charities. I do actively try to change the world for the better so that charity is not needed though. Cure the disease, don't just treat the symptoms.

I see that this is a problem in more than just my job.
I now have stronger conviction to protest at work that I do not believe in being bullied into a payroll deduction.
When JDRF came through for the diabetes, it was give if you wanna, and it did not matter how much.
I donated $30, and felt real good about it.
We all did a marathon walk for the JDRF as well, and that was fun.

Those were 100% free to choose how you want to do it funds...and I believe in the efforts being made to cure diabetes...</font>

Several years ago (OK more than several, like in the early to mid 1990's), the executive managers of the national offices of The United Way were arrested for embezzlement of United Way funds. 5 cents on the dollar was all that made it out of their offices to actually fund the charitable work they claimed they do and they were pulling in millions, mainly through payroll deductions.
Know who you are giving to by having it go straight from your hand into the hand of the needy. That way you can be sure anything you give is gotten by those who need it.
Just because two or three top officials were busted does not mean they were not replaced by people in the same racket.

correct me if i'm wrong, but doesnt the idea of being forced or to give to a fund or charity sound like socialism, were every thing must be evened out? if anybody has read terry goodkinds sword of truth books, it sounds like the imperial order's way of doing things.
