I can't seem to get by the toad in Toad Village on my way to see Shinwiki. I've killd him, but that just ticked everyone off and I was forced to kill them. Any ideas on how to get by him?

Did you tell him you were "Ukabu"?

If you did and he still didn't let you by, had you talked to Mekdawa (the toad down by the millhouse) earlier? You have to talk to him first to enable the quest.

If you had the quest which I think you must have since you indicated you were on your way to see Shinwiki and you used the keyword "UKABU" and still find toads blocking your path in the underground tunnels you've come across a common problem for many players. Fortunately, there is a solution.
Make certain that there are no other toads in sight except for the one or two that block your path and then nuke them. You have to take them out in "one blow" so that no alarm can be sounded and the whole of toad village turns against you.
This is not a major quest within the game. You can continue to play without ever doing this quest at all and still win the game.
