No offense, but i think these people need to be whipped the flesh of their backs. Freedom of speech, okay....but this is just too much.

Fred Phelps is the pastor of Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka. The congregation is made up mostly of his family. Phelps has 13 children, 54 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
This is probably the most disturbing part of this for me. Bigotry procreates so well...

shamrock_uk 03-07-2006 04:55 PM

 Why is it always in Kansas?

I agree that I think they should have their flesh whipped off, I hate disrespect to the dead.

Having said that, freedom of speech is absolute and I'm glad that the state won't take action against them.

Book them for disturbing the peace by all means, but limiting their right to be t**sers is no different from the demands of Muslims over the cartoons.

I'm greatly encouraged by the formation of the Patriot Guard Riders... a group of folks deciding to ensure that the dead are honored properly. By my math, the group that showed up for Sgt Jessie Davila's funeral would outnumber the entire Phelps church better than four to one. Good on 'em.

It's not that I'm against the free speech right to protest... but to do so at someone's funeral is just a wee bit too extreme for me to support. Perhaps returning the favor at their Sunday services would be appropriate... but I say no more, lest I bump up against that moratorium.

Heh, Fred Phelps. IIRC, he's the guy behind that "godhatesfags" website.

I heard he planned to go to Sweden during the Åke Green trial, but as far as I know he never came.

Yep. One and the same.

CNN had a reporter try and get his 'side' of the story. It ended with Phelps calling the reporter a pervert and saying he was going to hell with the rest of us.

I would rather be in the worst sort of hell than any heaven which let Fred Phelps in.

The funeral on the TV news showed more than 700 Patriot Guard Riders and supporters to Phelp's 12 or so family members. Never so sweet was the sound of hundreds of bike's engines roaring...

See if there's something wrong with my logic.

Phelps (and his cohort of crazies) live in the USA

They pay taxes at some level, at least when they buy things.

Ergo, they are supporting financially the same government that they are protesting against, and deserve to have their funerals wrecked.

EDIT => Phrased as someone who got an "A" in introductory logic. According to Phelps:

IF someone supports the US government, they deserve to have their funeral wrecked.

PHELPS supports the US government (by providing it with money from taxes)

THEREFORE Phelps deserves to have his funeral wrecked.

Simple logic.

Moose you are the same smart guy as always...

Except for using the word logic and Phelps in the same paragraph. :D

Seriously, Phelps runs a church made up mostly of his family and probably enjoys tax-exempt status to some degree. It is possible they pay little to no taxes at all if the church is the sole means of livelyhood.

True_Moose 03-07-2006 07:56 PM

But does he not purchase things - sale taxes are universal, no?
