What's with the new TV shows?
I'm finding so many of the newer shows have the music way too loud when people are speaking. Both my wife and I notice it all the time. Anybody else?
..drives me nuts! |
Re: What's with the new TV shows?
I've encountered several video games with the same problem. StarOcean: Til the End of Time to name one (all the same I love the game). My other pet peeve is shows that run voices so low you have to practically max out the volume to hear it, then they through in a loud spot (gun fire, explosions etc.) so loud you halfway fry your soundsystem.

I don't know about TV shows, but it's pretty annoying that they raise the volume during commercial breaks. You watch some low key movie or something and then *Wham!*

Re: What's with the new TV shows?
Actually, I was wondering whether the comment about music in tv shows is valid. I just thought that it was the kids playing the tv too loud (because they do and we always have to make them turn it down). But, if what you say is the case, then maybe they are turning it up loud so that they can hear dialogue (yeah, kids listening to dialogue, funny idea).
Equally I know that they play music way too loud - which is funny, 'cause I remember my parents saying that to me. But I still play music at the same 'too loud' volume which I always have, but my kids think that is quiet. We had a moment yesterday, where I asked daughter-child what music she was playing, when she came downstairs, and she responded "How did you know I was listening to music?". When I said that I could hear it, she stopped, listened and then said "How? I can't hear anything down here." She seemed genuinely mystified, so I hummed the notes I could hear, she told me what it was and agreed that she was listening to that upstairs, but just couldn't hear it downstairs. Music is making out children deaf. Aaargghhh! I'm turning into my parents..... |

That may be something else as well. I just heard on the news about 3 weeks ago that malls are considering emitting a "high pitch" sound that only teens can hear. This would deter them from loitering at the mall.
They placed the sound, but I could not hear it. ...course they would loose business as well, because I'm sure some, or many of them do shop while there. |

I have noticed that the dialogue on some shows is incredibly low, or at least seems that way to me. So I do have to turn it up, just like VR does, and keep the remote close at hand to either mute or turn down the commercials. Commercials have always been louder than regular programming. Part of it is to catch your attention. Part of it is to make sure you still hear the message while you're in the kitchen getting your snack before the show comes back on. That's how early VCRs could be programmed to "skip" commercials. As soon as it detected a certain rise in volume, it "turned off" until the volume went back down to the previous level. This wasn't a perfect way to skip commercials, because some shows like Miami Vice would have volume increases during the show, but it worked fairly well for the technology at the time. The best advice I can give is to watch reruns of Andy Griffith and I Love Lucy. Good, wholesome programming that was also very entertaining. Then mix in lots of UFC action for the current entertainment. :D</font> |
Re: What's with the new TV shows?
I notice it with "Bones" (excellent show btw, other than..) the CSI's, Sarah Conner chronicles; even Knight Rider was annoying that way at times.
The other thing I really hate is the stupid logos in the bottom right hand corner. As if anybody cares what station they're watching the show on. PS, say hi to mother Harper for me! :) |

If you don't like it, don't buy the product being advertised that offends you. It's the only way to change something like that. If it's proven that loudness gets notice and sells a product, that's what they'll do. If it's proven that the same thing hurts sales, you'd find it stop. |

Actually I like loud music in a film. I'm one of those "music is half the film" people. :) |
