I got one from a fellow named Steve, who wanted me to be a mod on his new forum, yesterday, or the day before. I did reply and it worked fine.

Yeah, there's weirdness going on. Yesterday morn I got a pm here from someone who registered "Join Date: December 31, 1969 Posts: 0" wanting me to join some website as a mod. *checking the calendar* Nope, it isn't April 01 yet.

*Same guy, it seems. Wonked join date, completely unsolicited. AND I have no way of viewing any sort of profile. Nope, ain't gonna do it.*

More weirdness. I was trying to send a pm to Z and no matter what I do, I get an error message telling me the pm is too long, limit it to *3* characters!

Here is the message I received:

Quote:

Hello my name is Steve , i'm a web developer and i have a proposal for you, i'm about to launch a new web site is mainly a Forum web site, i'm looking for people to join me as moderators, they just have to create a section about anything and then fill that section with categories and posts, in return they'll have the right to an advertisement space wich they can fill with google adsense or a personal banner promoting other websites.
i'm working with a designer, a publicist and seo expert , we have 15 people on board awaiting to create their sections , we'll have a period of 2 weeks to have all the sections ready, the main language will be english and spanish and then we'll be looking for more languages, so if you are interested contact me stevemazzanti@yahoo.com to provide you with more technical information.
Seemed harmless so I replied, but kindly, declined the offer.

Re: PMs Messing Up?

I got the Steve-spam as well. Some guy fishing for mods. Not good style to do that on other boards without the admins permission, perhaps, but at least he didn't make a thread about it.

Re: PMs Messing Up?

Got the same thing. Got a kick out of anyone asking me to be a mod anywhere. thought it was funny looking, especially the lousy grammar. I don't mean just an odd error here or there; it was one long run-on.

Thought about replying with my decline, but then I read Z's announcement, and just deleted it.

Funny also that he asked that we reply to his email address and not to his IW account. Though not when you consider he probably knew the account would be deleted shortly after discovery.

I got the same PM from him as well. I just thought he was a loney individual adrift in the big internet sea. But then I go teh message that my PM was too big as well.

Re: PMs Messing Up?

I didn't receive it, Probably because I disabled the pm function so that nobody can pm me. :P

Why would you do that?

Firestormalpha 09-07-2008 09:22 PM

Re: PMs Messing Up?

Ummm... maybe he had a PM stalker or something? Or he feels that if you can't say it to him in front of everyone, he doesn't want to hear it? Pure speculation on my part, I don't know Kakero on a personal basis, so I really haven't a clue.

I don't know about the PM limit thing, but that private message spammer would probably have had more success at staying unnoticed if he hadn't also sent the message to Ziroc and every mods. ;)

Not really as I also turned his ass in. :D

<font color="cyan">Lol he's not looking for mods at all.

It's a bot program sending out automated PMS.

Oh btw guess what, there's keyloggers involved. Don't reply or click any links.</font>

12/31/69 (or 31/12/69, if you prefer) is a common "zero" date in computing. Basically, if there's no date value, that gets plugged in. Since he's apparently been banned, his account's gone and when you check the PM, there's no start date, so 12/31/69 gets plugged in.

I got it too... I wonder how many people he sent it to? It'd be a pain, for sure...

I did reply via PM. Is it going to cause a problem for me now? I think I have my email address hidden.

Nothing that would get in simply by opening the PM I hope?

Luvian 09-07-2008 10:19 PM

Re: PMs Messing Up?

No that should be safe. He can not embed anything like scripts or such in a PM.

Re: PMs Messing Up?

Fixed the 3 char MAXIMUM.. I misread it as MINIMUM. ;) doh....

I posted a board wide announcement at the top of all forums--delete any spam he sent ya. Any PM's you get are safe-as in safe to open, but clicking on links an unknown user has in their PM *could* take you to a website with bad stuff..

I'm manually validating new members again now. These f'ing bots are getting smarter, sadly.. Going to install a newer image recognition package and other tricks to fool the bots.

Re: PMs Messing Up?

Just tried sending a PM literally ten seconds ago, and it was limiting me to 120 characters max. That's about as long as this post. Is that a bug?

Re: PMs Messing Up?

No, it just recognised you and decided you'd sent too many already ;)
