Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
Hi. I've been looking through the threads here in search of what good programs (+ also easy for newbies) there are for creating wall images for Dungeon Craft. I see that there are 3 ranges of wall sets, up-close, near-by and far away + the different angles that make up the 1st person view of Dungeon Craft. Would creating wall set images need to be done with a 3D graphics program?
I saw from another post info on DAZ + Renderosity... [QUOTE=manikus;1207735]I don't know if you followed the links I posted before... DAZ for beginners DAZ F.A.Q. DAZ Forum for Studio DAZ Tutorials Renderosity Tutoials Renderosity Studio Forums Would I be able to create wall images with one of these? What do you guys use when making wall set images? |
Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
I have some good 2D images i'd like to port into D.C. wall sets...

Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
Not that I'm an art person compared to some here (Uatu, Manikus, Dinonykos to name a few), but the images could be cut-n-pasted into the DC wall templates that have set perspectives, and you could scale to fit for he farther away walls. This is the simple answer, and I'm sure its not news.
For making walls with other programs, that is not so simple to explain. We haven't found a good format for the 3D art programs (DAZ, truespace, ect) for doing walls. I'd try using Easytex if you have good 2d images, but I know nothing about it except it takes the 2D images and lays them out in 3D perspective. I dunno where to get it, or how to use it; but I've seen its end-work and it looks good ST |

Er, yeah... as for easyyex, I'm sure someojne around this forum would know where to find it.

Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
Ha ha... Manikus and Dinonykos are the "wall guys" here - I got fed up with making things fit in the wall templates, so I am just drawing new walls up in MS Paint like my other stuff now...

EZ-tex: as far as I know, it's gone. It used to be hosted at the official site, but I took it down. It's not open source and there was no type of statement with it as to permissions for usage and such. I'm not sure, but maybe the guy that made it went by the name of Phalzyr...one might be able to find out by combing through old yahoo list messages.
3D: DC doesn't use a ture 3D perspective, but a 'kinda' one-point perspective that is distorted along the y-axis, and then a funky, unique perspective for certain angled walls. As far as I can tell, you cannot take a texture and run it through a 3D program to make a wall for DC. (With that being said, you could make solid color walls with a 3D program...) If you have 4 different versions of the texture, you can do a wall in a 3D program...but I think you can get just as good of results, if not better, doing it 2D. Making the wall is all about patience and practice. The best place to start is with a template, and then cut, paste and copy your texture into the appropriate places, distorting the texture for the angled walls. I prefer to work using a graphics program that supports layers, such as Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or the free, GIMP. |
Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
thanks. I'll check out Gimp.
Also I just realized that I need to set the forum search options to search for more than just 1 day. I was wondering why I was only seeing a few posts on this forum and that the older posts kept on disappearing. hahaha. :haha: Now I can search through some more posts. |
Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
What resolution are you planning on working in, 640x480, 800x600, or 1024x768?

In case, you're going to use the 640x480 resolution, which seems to be very popular, I've attached two wall templates. They both will look the same in the game, but the tall wall allows you to have, um, taller walls.
The letters correspond between the two different templates so you can see how they work. click on the images to see full-sized |
Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
Mmm - the tall walls look fun :) Will have to experiment with that one of these days (after making sure that it works for me!)

Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
I thought about putting up the templates for the extended and the hyper walls...but thought that might be a bit much for just starting.
Maybe soon, I'll be able to upload my ultimate wall format (taking Dinonykos progression and taking it to it's logical end. :D) |

I've actually started a turoial for my workflow for making walls. I will make sure and let you all know when it's done. It's about half-way right now, but I've got a fair amount of school work to do between now and Saturday afternoon, so probably won't be finished until Sunday or Monday.

Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
OK. In the meantime I've tried it out using the regular wall template. I'm almost there but not quite. Here's what I got so far...
A green wall added into the template. Part of the green expands beyond the squares although I tried my best to stay within the boxes. http://www.icestorm9999.com/dc/greentemp.png and here's what it looks like when added as a wall in the editor... http://www.icestorm9999.com/dc/dcgreenwall1.png http://www.icestorm9999.com/dc/dcgreenwall2.png http://www.icestorm9999.com/dc/dcgreenwall3.png Looking straight at it its alright but the angled views show a part that shouldn't be showing. |
Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
Removing the blue is pretty easy to fix. Because you went outside of the box for wall 'P', you covered the pixel in 0,0 which determines the walls transparency. So, if you plug a blue pixel into that exact spot, you should be fine.

Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
great! :thumbsup2:
http://www.icestorm9999.com/dc/dcgreenwall4.png It's looking allot better now. So the pixel at 0,0 determines the transparencies of all the walls? or just wall P? With a bit more practice I think I can get some decent looking walls. |
Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
Nice slimy walls, sokolkeep! Keep up the good work, let's see more coming! :D
|
Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
The pixel at 0,0 determines the transparency for the wall graphic, not just wall P. It works this way for all of the wall formats.
|
Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
@sokolkeep: well done. What did you end up using, Photoshop's distortion tool or easywalltex?
|
Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
For everybody looking for the Easywalltex utlity (you supply the texture and it makes the wall) it can be found here:

Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
Wow thanks Man[ikus]! I was looking for that. I lost my copy. :thumbsup2:

Re: Creating Wall Set Images for Dungeon Craft (What programs to use?)
I think a lot of us had lost our copy. :) I know I had, and ST had, as well.
Thank goodness for archives. :D:D:D |
