New Amsterdam
Anyone else watch it? Your thoughts?
Seems like a mix of Highlander and today's cop shows... but without the beheadings, and with sensitive man tendencies. Wasn't quite as good as I'd hoped it would be, but it's worth another look at this point. |
Re: New Amsterdam
I don't think I've heard of it, what channel is it on?
|
Re: New Amsterdam
Fox. Premier was last night, after Idol.
*edit* Looks like it's going to be on tomorrow night again (Thursday). Didn't see if it's a repeat or a new one. |
Re: New Amsterdam
Would you reccomend it?
Was New York originally called New Amsterdam? |
Re: New Amsterdam
Has the question thread migrated? :D
I'm up in the air on it so far. The basic premise (he'll live until he finds his one true love, and then he'll finally grow old and die) kind of works, and it's got the Highlander elements of having gone through life before. There are things that concern me as far as its long-term potential. For example, him going to an AA meeting and announcing that it's been 15,373 days since his last drink (more than 42 years, if you're counting) *really* doesn't do much to help him remain incognito. And commenting about someone sounding like his last 609 girlfriends... same thing. IOW, if it's been put together by a standard writer trying to utilize the highlander-type plot line as a hack, fuhgeddaboudit. If it's being put together by someone trying to establish an ongoing intelligent series, I've got high hopes. Until it gets canceled, that is... 'cause intelligent series don't seem to last long... :( As for the city.... it was called New Amsterdam until the English conquered it in 1664... |
Re: New Amsterdam
I TiVoed it, I will watch it this wekemnd and report back. I hope this will replace Journeyman.

Re: New Amsterdam
I missed last night's episode... will check if it's online. In any case, it will be on Monday nights now.
I'm definitely interested in your thoughts :) |

Re: New Amsterdam
The episodes are online at Fox. There's a lot of dutch action in there... the main character (John Amsterdam) previously went by the name of John York...
I'm still up in the air on it. It looks like it could be good, but they're going to have to raise things up a bit, keeping some things mysterious. After just two episodes, it feels like they're releasing lots of new pieces of his past with each episode. Too many, I think... he's only got 400 years of history to go through, and it appears that he's already covered 70 (or so) of them. Still.... Monday night, 9PM, is the next episode. I'll check it out... |
Re: New Amsterdam
There's a thread on Terry Brooks forum about it too.
I see it as a kind of Highlander meets Angel thing? It seems like he really doesn't care who knows, which is an interesting twist. The old man in it is his son. Even the flashback has him as a Lawyer and his daughter is working for him. ..must be hard, constantly watching your kids grow old and die... I don't really know what they can do with this? |
Re: New Amsterdam
Still mixed thoughts after the third episode... intriguing, but aside from the "one true love" thread, everything seems to wrap up nicely in each episode. There don't appear to be any other long-running story threads, which is great for the pablum-eating unintelligent masses, but fails to capture the necessary mindshare for really intriguing television (like Lost or CSI).
The whole "older-looking person, I'm your dad" thing will undoubtedly wear thin after a while, if not already. It looks like the process of his kids working for him will continue to be (over)used in each generation... I concur, though... watching your kids grow old and die again and again would have to be hard, and I would think would harden your heart. Perhaps that will show up in a future episode... They're already using some of the Highlander ploys... where he was a celebrated craftsman or artist, and creates new works long after his "death". I'll be curious to see how many more they use... In any case, I'll watch it again next week, just to see what happens. |
Re: New Amsterdam
I watched and I have enjoyed them all. I liked the nod to Highlander, when his grandson mentioned getting his head chopped off. He said, yeah I'll have to try that one.
I would like to see longer plot lines, long 2 or 3 episode stories. |

Re: New Amsterdam
You're kidding me... my apologies! I'll see if there's another way to see it...
|
Re: New Amsterdam
I do have *other* ways, but I would have preferred seeing it legally (even if they throw hundreds of commercials at you during their online viewing...)
|
Re: New Amsterdam
They only throw about four... not bad, considering.
I just tried sending it to you as a friend's recommendation. I used the email addy in your profile... if that's not best, PM me a better one. *edit* Let me know if that works. |
Re: New Amsterdam
Replied to the email, since I'm not sure whether it's the right email address, I'll reply here too. ;)
Doesn't work, gives the same error of the service only being available in the US. |
Re: New Amsterdam
The email response did indeed work... bummer, that. :(
Let me know if using an anonymizer works. Failing that, I watched a couple of episodes on-line today (was at the eye doctor, and he took away my sight for a bit). Further observations: 1. Looks like the series is happily taking on issues. So far, I recall having seen rape, alcohol/drug abuse, honor killing, and police corruption. And that's without having thought about what happens in each episode. 2. It doesn't take the politically correct slant, although he (Amsterdam) seems to try to correct today's actions to make up for yesterday's mistakes. 3. It doesn't follow the length of planning that Lost goes through, methinks. The rape episode had the name of a rape victim being outed by "an on-line gossip blogger" (if I can paraphrase). Puh-lease... as if *one* person making a guess will make a difference. A noted person (can you spell Drudge?), but not an average joe... at least, not unless everyone else is also blogging about it. New episode tonight... during the NCAA finals, methinks. Don't know if I'll really watch it or the game... yet... |
Re: New Amsterdam
Apparently the season finale is playing this Monday night. I read somewhere that they only filmed a few episodes, and that the cast has since been scattered to the winds. Too bad... it was growing on me...
At least there's one more fix available :) |
