New Art for default DC
1 Attachment(s)
I know I said I wasn't going to post anything 'cause I was busy, but I was playing around and came up with this fine fellow, which will join the other 6 PCs. :)
He has the distinction of being number 10 on the roster, which marks him as a Fighter. 1 = Paladin 2 = Ranger 3 = Fighter 4 = Cleric 5 = Thief 6 = Magic User 7 = Druid And at 8, it starts over, but the other gender this time through. :D Note: the Druid didn't make it for the last release, but you should see a couple of them for the next. The icon for this fighter is going to be great. I'm not going to share it right now, though. :D This is the 176x211 size. There will be a 352x422 as always. And, if you really want to see how this came out, check it out at my gallery page at full size. http://artzone.daz3d.com/index.php?m...2074&p_id=4325 |
Re: New Art for default DC
Looks great, Manikus! :) Nice armor there!
|
Re: New Art for default DC
Yup! Great!
So we will never see the respective icon??? :( Or only in the next finished adventure? |
Re: New Art for default DC
Everyone will get to see the icon, but not until the next release of DC. :D

Does anyone mind if I post another?
This is number 8. :) This is the 176x211 resolution image. To check out the full-sized, you can visit my gallery at the ArtZone. It's the same deal with the icon as for number 10. :) |
Re: New Art for default DC
Oo - very nice! The armor is very well-done!
I don't think anyone minds... ;) |

It is amazing what you are able to produce with this program. |

Lord Killjoy (back in the day) was doing the same thing, but his graphics were more character study than scene. ;) Perhaps, with some prodding, SilentThief will start to use Studio to give us some 3D art... |
Re: New Art for default DC
Although it does not concern me personally, it would be cool if there were wallsets done with the same/a similar technique, e.g. trees or walls that really look 3D. Thus DC games could even resemble state-of-the-art 3D RPGs while still being pseudo-3D. I like your wallsets very much, but they fall back behind your NPCs :D ...
|
Re: New Art for default DC
I've tried doing walls, but the perspective gets me every time. :(
I do have some overlays (in an example elsewhere in this forum - for the Silver Blades project) of objects. I have plans for trees and now that I can use your newest wall format, I will do them (when I get the time :D). |

Man, it's been so quiet. I guess I better add another picture. :)
Here is #7. |

Here's the latest of my offerings to the default art for DC. This is #13

Re: New Art for default DC
Posting pics is a proper method to awake the community, eh? :)
Both are brilliant. The wolf (?) is perhaps a little too cute :D... Will these be used as character pics or as in-game encounters? I ask because I am always wondering if character pics should have backgrounds like those you added here or if netutral bgs are better. |

Ha ha... ;)
Nice stuff, good backgrounds and clothes and all that. (Pictures are a great way to wake up the community!) (I was away, though - business trip, you know...) |
Re: New Art for default DC
Welcome back, Uatu. :)
Not only are they a pleasant wake up call, but they are nice diversion during finals. I've got three done, and three to go. (Finals, that is.) |
Re: New Art for default DC
Okay, then I will post some pics, too! I am not sure if I already posted the first. The others are quite new. I must admit that I do not know what a crossbow looks like... :)

Some sprites:

Re: New Art for default DC
Very nice work, Dinonykos. I like all of these, but particularly the center sprite. :) It reminds me of the group of ninjas that are always harassing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. :D:D:D
|
Re: New Art for default DC
The crossbow looks fine :)
My favorite is the last picture (barbarians?) - their beards and all make a very nice scene. :D (Manikus is right about the picture before that, though - and the picture before that one, too ;) ) |
Re: New Art for default DC

Since I decided to use an event-based combat system, I did a lot of sprites during the last weeks. The creature in the center is what I would call an inseurypteride (terrestrial eurypteridoid-insectoid creature). The guys on the right remind me of those old pseudo 3D games Dungeon Master and especially Eye of the Beholder (probably because of their formation, and because they are four). I hope it's okay to put these pics into this thread since it may not be very useful for the default art... :) |

Re: New Art for default DC
Very nice work. I think this is as good a thread as any to post them in. It puts them all in one place, and makes it easier for me to track down what I might want to add to the default DC package.
|
Re: New Art for default DC
Lots of nice sprites there! Sprites are a lot of work! (You are right, the last sprite does look a bit Eye of the Beholder-ish... :D ) Your combat system sounds very interesting, Dinonykos...

So far, it is a combination of a few Logic-Blocks (and text events). It works like this: Player is asked whether he wants to attack "berserk-style", normal or "defensive-style". Party's total Thaco is checked, a random value is substracted (and a bonus or malus depending on the chosen attack style). If Thaco is lower/equal than a specific value for the opponents, the party wins one round. If "berserk-style" (Thaco is reduced) was chosen, the party members lose a random amount of HP based on the specific AC. If Thaco is higher than a specific value, the party members lose random amount of HP based on the specific AC. If one party member dies, the battle is automatically lost. The number of rounds varies with the specific monsters. I thought of including a HP-system for the monsters, but that is too complicated for me right now... :( After a lost or won battle, the party (pre-generated characters) is shown either happy or sad and beaten... :) |
Re: New Art for default DC
This sounds awesome, Dinonykos. If you get the chance, could you post an example of the code used for the combat? Not anything giving your story away, just something that will show other people how to properly set the logic blocks? :) Maybe it could be a little tutorial that you release around the time that you are releasing the mod... :D:D:D
|
Re: New Art for default DC
Since I don't know if the mod will ever be finished, I should post one example. But that will need some time... :D
To be honest, so far only one encounter works absolutely like I planned, because I repeatedly make mistakes in the GPDL scripts. Furthermore, I steadily confuse the false/true-chains at the end of the logic blocks... :( :( :( Maybe writing a kind of tutorial will help me avoiding mistakes... :D |
Re: New Art for default DC
This is exactly why I would love it if you did a tutorial. I pretty much leave logic block and GPDL scripts out of my designs, because I'm always messing them up. :)
Besides this, tutorials will allow more people to do what we know how to do (or in this case, don't know how to so) and hopefully increase the number of people usinf DC and rhe numbe of designs. :D:D:D |
Re: New Art for default DC
Hmm - sounds pretty difficult! But it would be fun to try it out. :) The party ending up happy or sad and beaten up is kind of funny, too :D
|
Re: New Art for default DC
I'm thinking about combining the technique of multiple options before a combat with traditional combat, a la the Goldbox games.
You come upon a group of creatures who are shown with a sprite, and given the options of talk, flee, ignore, attack, etc. Depending on the player's choice and the particular event, various things could happen, including, but not limited to, combat. |
Re: New Art for default DC
That is what I try to do for my own, highly unfinished game ;)
|
Re: New Art for default DC
:) I just did a spring-cleaning of the DC folder, to put all of the unfinished designs that I haven't worked on in at least six months away in a back-up folder...I moved more than ten designs. :D:D:D Talk about not finishing what I've started. ;)
|
Re: New Art for default DC
Ha ha... I only have one game that I am ever working on... Of course it never even reaches the 2% finished mark, so I am in the same boat as you... ;)
|
Re: New Art for default DC
I am like a butterfly, flittering from idea to idea. :D
There are five designs that survived the cleaning: -Default design -Silver Blades remake design -Silver Marches epic design (I've been working on this since the beginning with DC and I must be close to 15% finished at the moment) -a mini mod design that is almost done -a tutorial design for teaching new-comers how to DC |
Re: New Art for default DC
Well, that's not too bad (5 is a lot) - a bit of a shame about your other projects (transformers, superheroes, etc. :D )
|
Re: New Art for default DC
I'm sure I'll trot them back out at some point. I made a directory called "back-burner" (which I should be able to remember what's in it) and stuck them all inside to await a fresh breath of inspiration. ;)
|
Re: New Art for default DC
I have only one design, "Helmetlands", but I restarted twice (partly because the new walls and thus new possibilities, partly because I learned how to use logic blocks, but mostly because the previous two versions were to big and complicated).
And since yesterday, I also have a "Tutorial" design, because I started the "Event-based-combat tutorial". :) But as I wrote, it will take some time to finish it. Yesterday I realized that even explaining how to add a text and a question list event is somewhat difficult, especially if you also try describing conditional chains. Fumbling and finding out how to do it is different from being able to explain it... :( |
Re: New Art for default DC
:) I've discovered the same thing working on my tutorial. Once you know DC, many of the things you can do are easy to explain. But, if the reader has no experience with DC or FRUA, some of it is pretty difficult to articulate.

OK, more new art for Default DC. :D
This is sp_SPic15.png. As you can tell it's a dwarf. :) 15 = dwarf 16 = gnome 17 = halfling 18 = dwarf 19 = gnome 20 = halfling It just dawned on me that I might get all of these done before the next release. :D:D:D If you would like to see the full-sized version, please visit my gallery at the ArtZone. http://artzone.daz3d.com/index.php?m...3077&p_id=4325 |
Re: New Art for default DC
Looking good! :) Glad to see some of the "little folk" appearing in your art, too, manikus...
