Is 2 years jail enough for spam?

'Spammer cops 2 years in jail'

A US man from the state of New Jersey has been jailed for more than two years for his part in a spamming operation, that sent out millions of unsolicited emails.

Todd Moeller was caught in a sting operation after agreeing to send junk email advertising to around 1.2 million people.

Mr Moeller says he earned tens of thousands of dollars from his work.

I think a fine of a certain amount per email sent out would be in order as well. Hit these jerks where it hurts, in the pocketbook.

Yep! I agree Sazerac. Just like drug dealers hit them in the pocket to help fund the next prosecution.

I doubt he'll do it again.

I say cut off every other finger, be sure to leave the traffic finger in tact he probably uses it a lot.

I would restrict internet access from him for 10 ish years. The way online predators are restricted. Since they didn't molest anyone, cut the jail time but ban them from the web for abusing it. If he's caught violating that, then jail.

I agree jail is to much. Worse crimes get less time or none. Fine and no internet for 10 years.

Hmm but does that mean that the penalty for Spamming should be less, or the penalty for the other crimes should be more?

yeah jail is too harsh, big fine taking away all his earnings and then some, should do it

More of coarse.

Sorry I disagree, though I thought the sentance was a bit steep too, though two years should be for a second offense. I think 6 months and loss of all assets should be right.

2 years is too lenient. 10 years behind the bars would be just nice.

^^lmao, fascist. We're talking about someone filling your inbox with unwanted emails, requiring you to press the delete key, not grevious bodily harm

Yeah, and to me it's a crime. Why should we be lenient to criminals?

I have to agree, jail time is ridiculous for someone essentially sending junk mail. Is there more to it, like they were sending viruses or phishing? It's an inconvenience for the receiver but hardly a crime warranting jail, and much less inconvenient than say telemarketing or even real junk mail which wastes resources and clogs up your mail box.

lol, so a criminal is a criminal and there's no distinction based on what the crime is? In that case let's put everyone in jail instead of giving them parking tickets for parking in the wrong place.

If you want to go that far we may as well cut the tax expenditure of prison make the punishment for all crimes from jaywalking to 1st degree murder etc., death.

Convicted in a court of law then taken to the back lot within an hour and shot. No muss, no fuss, just plug and play.

Not that I think it's a good idea, but it would simplify things.

So defensive aren't you? You did something we should know about? :P

it's called playing devil's advocate. I'm defending the point, not myself. Speaking of which, you seemed to have dodged having to reply. Run out of clever comebacks? :p

Use your brain, there's no need for me to answer a rhetorical question.

And speaking of which, are you really playing a devil's advocate or is it because the matters concern you deeply? Is it because you have done something? And afraid of a tough punishment being handed out to you? And hence the defensive mode?

Eh, I'm sure it's all friendly banter and whatnot, but could you two tone down the personal remarks, it's making the room feel tense.

Just my thoughts.

Nah, it's okay. During our childhood days Vaskez and I used to climb Mount Everest nakedly and then jab each other at the summit with pointed stick just to see who would pass out first. Nowadays with him getting too busy with life and with I'm deemed unfit to climb such a high mountain, we've decided to relive our childhood days by jabbing each other with words at this forum instead. :hehe:

lol yeah I killed someone yesterday and was worried that if it's 2 years jail for spam, what would they give me for that? So I was arguing they should tone down all punishments

It's actually surprisingly hard to not break laws. I currently have installed, in my computer, a Microsoft Windows XP operating system which I did not buy myself but borrowed from my little brother as I could not find my own disc. I have also transferred music from CD:s to my computer, and from there to my mp3 player, and changed the music from one format to another. I think this consitutes a breach of the Finnish copyright law, but I'm not exactly sure. And then there's all the slander.
