Yep its world cup cricket time

Who do you think will win? South Africa the #1 ranked team, Australia the bookies faves, West Indies the home team to return to its 1970's and 1980's domination, England to finally win after losing in the final 3 times or India to overcome its phobia of playing away from home and live up to its potential.

wellard 03-14-2007 07:21 PM

Results so far ..

West indies beat Pakistan

Australia beat Scotland

Kenya beat Canada

johnny 03-14-2007 09:23 PM

I'm pretty sure Holland is NOT going to win. :D

T-D-C 03-15-2007 01:01 AM

I was hoping for a better showing from the Scotts. Im a firm believer that if you are going to talk it up before a match then you better deliver.

I think it will be a South Africa vs Australia Final.

wellard 03-15-2007 06:54 PM

Ireland have just tied the game with Zimbabwe that must have been a thrilling game .... go the paddies :D

Captain Obvious 03-15-2007 07:16 PM

I would love to see NZ continue their form from the Chappel Hadlee series, but that would mean consistency, which is totally against thier philosophy - we lost ot BANGLADESH for gods sake!

So, obviously i want NZ to win, but if not them then anyone but australia.

I think a South Africa/Sri Lanka final might happen (if the aussies all get injured/kidnapped/some crippling disease.

ZFR 03-16-2007 05:49 PM

Anyone can post a site with the scores? too lazy to search...

wellard 03-16-2007 05:52 PM

Well Cap'n NZ have just beaten England quite easily so the pressure is off NZ untill the next stage.

INDIA all the way, you must be crazy if you think otherwise. Actually i haven't watched cricket since i was 10 or 12 years old, so im not really current with the program, but my gut instinct tells me its going to be India.

Then again, we hardly ever see anything about cricket on our tv networks. When you live in Holland, it's football, speedskating, some more football, cycling, and even more football, and that's all the sports you're gonna get. They didn't even bother covering the Superbowl this year, something that pissed me off immensely, because now i had to watch it on a German channel, with German commentators, and they don't have a clue what they're talking about and were more impressed with the halftimeshow than the game itself.

How is your gut feeling? because India just lost to Bangladesh - thats got to hurt

But in the biggest shock off all Ireland has just beaten Pakistan! I kid you not the paddys have sent pakistan out of the world cup, who would believe it

from the bbc ...

"Ireland produced one of the greatest victories in cricket's rich history by beating Pakistan on St Patrick's Day amid unbelievable tension in Jamaica."

Tragic news about Bob Woolmer's death. Some things are more important than a sporting match, and this is one of them.

wellard 03-19-2007 04:13 AM

Sad news indeed Memmnoch, have they ruled out suicide?

Haven't ruled anything out yet. The autopsy is still being conducted to determine cause of death. It's a tragedy though, isn't it.

Target 03-19-2007 06:35 AM

Very sad news about Bob Woolmer. 

But I have to say a huge well done to Ireland!! Amazing match, and on St paddies day as well. Baring a huge loss to the windies I can see them going through!!

Best not talk about England, was not the greatest performance again, oh dear we could not even bowl out Canada!!

Memnoch 03-20-2007 11:59 PM

Apparently the police think that Bob may have been murdered!

Woolmer's death 'suspicious' - police

Police are now treating Bob Woolmer's death as suspicious, Mark Shields, the deputy commissioner of police, told a news conference in Jamaica.

"We have already informed the Woolmer family of these developments," Shields said. "Having met with the pathologists, our medical personnel and investigators, there is now sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Woolmer, which we are now treating as suspicious."

Pervez Mir, the Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman, told AFP: "The police suspect that Woolmer may have been murdered. They have started an investigation."

Shields said the police had been in close contact with the Pakistan team management, the Cricket World Cup committee and the ICC, but he would not speculate on the cause of Woolmer's death. "It would be inappropriate for me to make any comment at this stage as we have still not got the final official report from the pathologists," he said.

Talat Ali, the Pakistan team manager, told Geo TV they had not been given full details by the police. "They have not made any reference to poisoning or anything yet, as some reports are suggesting," Ali said. "There is no information at all that this poison could be involved. Investigations will carry on so we cannot come to any conclusions right now."

Ali denied Pakistan were not allowed to travel. "There are no police restrictions on the team," he said. "As planned for now, we are flying back on Saturday."

Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious in his hotel room on Sunday and pronounced dead shortly after at a Jamaica hospital. Woolmer's family said after speaking to doctors they expected his death came from a stress-related heart attack. An autopsy completed on Tuesday was inconclusive, but investigators were waiting for the results of toxicology tests to see if they helped determine the cause.

Just seen Bob’s wife on Sky news saying she didn't think he would commit suicide.

And a HUGE well done to Ireland on reaching the super 8!!! It was only a matter of time until one of crickets smaller teams made it. This can only help the game.

Sever 03-22-2007 07:20 AM

Congrats to Ireland.

Watching their progress with interest...

Scotland are 83 for 8 against the Dutch! Holland eally excel on those flat pitches!

wellard 03-22-2007 05:59 PM

And Holland win against the haggis munching skirt wearing Scots :D

Memnoch 03-22-2007 08:27 PM

Confirmation - Bob Woolmer was murdered. He died via asphyxiation from manual strangulation.

I listened to the press conference in Jamaica where it was announced that the case was now a homicide and that Bob died of manual strangulation.

The death of Bob Woolmer is now being treated as a murder case. During a press conference in Jamaica it was revealed that he did of asphyxiation by manual strangulation. Post mortem results show that Woolmer was strangled.

"We have a lot of line of inquiry but there are no suspects," said Mark Shields, Jamaica's deputy commissioner of police who is now heading the police investigation. Apparently we won one, even though it didn't matter anymore. So what does beating Scotland mean in the world of cricket ? Is this an upset ? Or is Scotland one of the lesser Commonwealth teams ?

It is a good win Johnny though scotland are not rated that highly. But with the pakistan coaches murder the world cup is now a sideshow.

What gets me is that the police now confirm strangulation. How the hell did it take so many days to come up with that, the killer has had too much time to hide his tracks. This has been incompetantly handled. :(

I know i could look this up googling for it, but were the Dutch completely helpless against the Aussies, or did they at least put up a fight ?

Still strange that a team that represents our country on a worldstage doesn't, or hardly gets any recognition. My info regarding the game against the Scots comes directly from the BBC, no program on Dutch television thought it was worth mentioning apparently, friggin shame.

So who are the big favourites for the crown ? Australia ? South Africa perhaps ? Or is this a game where being the best is no garantee at all, kinda like in football ? Fill me in guys, i'm willing to learn.

johnny 03-22-2007 11:43 PM

On a sidenote...lets hope this murder doesn't have anything to do with religeon, that would be devastating for sports in general. It's bad enough as it is already. :(

</font>
They were completely incompetent and were smashed. In football terms it was like losing 10-0 to Brazil.

I thought Nederlanders' win was more impressive given that they haven't imported any West Indians, Indians, Pakistanis, Australians or Poms in their side.

Being the best in cricket generally increases your chances at victory, bit like basketball. Upsets are rare (which is why the Ireland v Pak match is being celebrated). The favourites are the OZ and the Saffas.

Target 03-23-2007 04:38 AM

So, who will win the big one today, India V SL?

Memnoch 03-23-2007 10:53 PM

Well, India are out. If I were Greg Chappell, I wouldn't bother going back to India for safety reasons!

Target 03-24-2007 09:59 AM

I think there is still a very very slim chance of India going through, but highly unlikely. I just hope England puts in a Good preformance today...if the weather stays bad, I could even see England going out, as they never start scoring well, Duckworth-lewis could spell trouble!!
But both pakistan and india going out at this stage is good for all the others in the super 8.

Captain Obvious 03-25-2007 09:12 PM

Hell yeah! we (NZ) start with 2 points, and get to play Ireland & Bangladesh!!!

Although those damned aussies looked pretty good against the south africans...

heres hoping Ponting gets hit on the head with a coconut or something...

Not after Woolmers murder! reminds me of the soccer world cup a few years ago when a player was killed after the cup because he scored an own goal.

BTW any thoughts on Inzy being questioned 3 times by the police?
