Looks like I caught my first ever virus, thanks to a sneaky one getting into an online game that I sometimes play with my brother-in-law, called ConquerOnline. I went to their website today and read that a recent update had sent us a virus, and that they did not catch it in time because it was not detected by Norton. They claim that only McAfee Plus was confirmed to be of any help, so I downloaded their trial version, taking their advice and having to remove Avast before installation.

Then I boot into Safe Mode and try to access McAfee, but it will not turn on! The danged thing don't work in Safe Mode, so I had to reboot and let Windows boot up and from normal operation is the only way I can get McAfee to actually run a scan.

Crap that it is. Its running now...let's see if it can actually detect the blamed virus in the next hour that it'll take to run.

Larry_OHF 11-12-2006 03:32 AM

Update: McAfee was able to delete the two known files from my game folder and I rebooted and looked for them and they did not return.

I am still spiffed that the virus scanner would not initiate during SafeMode, but at least I can go to bed now. Blasted day its been, y'all.

Get rid of Macaffe... you are better of with just wishing you don't get a virus than using it.

F-prot is in my opinion the best virus scanner, it does not use up all your memory like Macaffee and Norton (just getting rid of Norton and I felt like I got a brand new computer), it has a very good realtime scanner, its datafiles are updated almost daily, it's cheap, you can buy it and set it up on 3 computer in the same house... and it's Icelandic... doesn't get much better... If your looking for accuracy there is a 3rd party Website http://www.virusbtn.com that regularly tests all the virus software manufacturers.

Symantec are one of the ONLY to score 100% on all tests. Many other manufacturers fail these in the wild tests and known threat tests.

I know Symantec software can be a resource hog at times though a lot of this has been addressed in the 2007 release.

BTW Larry which virus was it? It is rare for one of our scanners not to pick a virus up, also what version were you running?

ZFR 11-12-2006 05:23 AM

So is this the thread where we post which antivirus is best?

If so I recommend Avast!. Been using it for almost a year and it's great. It also got 100% in the virusbulletin tests.

And the Home Edition is completely free.

Sever 11-12-2006 06:35 AM

Dunno where AVG scored but it's lower in my books now that they're not offering free coverage after January. I think i'll still go with AVG though. Haven't had any problems since it was installed. The last one, Trend Micro was a shocker. It took weeks of stuffing around before i fixed the damage that it let through: Damage necessary for the anti-virus adware that followed...

Harkoliar 11-12-2006 06:46 AM

can you guys check where ESET (NOD is another name) in the VBtest 100%? I couldnt register as my activation key hasnt arrived in my email account yet.

andrewas 11-12-2006 08:43 AM

40 success/ 3 failure/ 5 no entries. October was a success, as was every entry since april 02. A better record than Symantech, at 34 success/6 failure/8 no entry, although the most recent failure was back september '99.

@sever - AVG is still free, its just the older version which is being discontinued.

Harkoliar 11-12-2006 09:10 AM

cheers andrewas

ZFR 11-12-2006 10:11 AM

and while you're at it andrewas, can you check Avast for me?

Mozenwrathe 11-12-2006 11:02 AM

no more free AVG after January?

and from what I hear, Avast is free damned good...

I have been a zonealarm fan for quite some time, and it was the first security suit that I paid alot of money for, but a few months ago I installed Nortan security suit which came with my fancy motherboard and haven't looked back!

I bought 2 copies of Norton Systems Works with a degree of regret. It does make things slower and is not user friendly. There's also no tech support, try phoning some time, you'll see. You think a big company like that would have ____ together.

Larry_OHF 11-12-2006 06:56 PM

Oooookay...let's try this another way. I will post the actual warning from the website, though some of you will still not read what it says and will continue to tell me which antivirus you think is the best.

We regret to announce that there was a virus found in the last CO patch 4321. As a result, many of our players' computers may have been affected. The virus shows up in the form of a _desktop.ini file in the Conquer 2.0 folder, under C3/0003/611 and c3/0003/741. In other words, if you look at your CO directory and see a file named C3/0003/611/_desktop.ini or C3/0003/741/_desktop.ini, you are confirmed to have been infected. The file may be hidden so you need to turn off the 'Hide hidden file' and 'Hide protected operating system file' options under Tools->Folder Options-> View

Unfortunately, most of the current anti-virus programs including Norton and Kasparsky etc, failed to catch this virus. This is how the virus has slipped through our QA's detection. The only confirmed tool to catch this virus so far is McAfee VirusScan Plus. This is a very malicious virus, so please follow the procedures below to delete this virus as soon as possible.

I find Ewido to be amazing. It's now AVG anti-spyware (it catches everything though). The free version has caught and cleaned desktophijackers and virii that no other scanner could catch (except panda). It is also compatible with most mainstream scanners like Norton and Mcfee allowing you to use it alongside them. Honestly, I dumped the rest and stuck with this one alone...it has a liveguard anyways...

Panda is great too but the good version costs cash.

I was just giving my because everyone else was <---Conformist :D

Anyways, it's strange that an obscure virus scanner such as McAfee PLUS would pick it up and none others.

Glad you got your stuff sorted out, though I hope the Conquer guys give a better explanation on how it happened....

Mellagar 11-13-2006 01:32 PM

Avast is a good virus catcher, since Kapersky is no longer free for its updates, at least last I heard it wasn't. Norton, what a waste of space...easier to cure viruses with a bowling ball.

Jorath Calar 11-13-2006 01:52 PM

So glad to hear I'm not alone in my disgruntlement against Norton

I thought my machine was clean but I currently have 7 spyware virus on my machine I checked last night with another program. I have no idea how long I have had them since Norton never picked them up and runs as slow as hell and hogs memory and complains with pop up messages every time I shut it off when offline. The popup messages often interrupt my game play so it is just as well leave it on. I will try avast tonight.
