I did not know that this could be done until I started shopping for a replacement fan for my vid card (yes, still stuck with the old GeForce III for those that remember me wanting a new card)...and now the fan is making noise, indicating that its dying. I found the related link about how to oil most fans.

You would use an entire can of oil on one fan? Eep!!

Well, how many fans are you going to oil in your lifetime?

Let's see...I currently have 7 fans in my machine, and a 3/4 can of oil that was already here when we moved into this house. Therefore, any oiling I do will be totally cost-efficient. Now, taking that I assume that fans would not have to be oiled all that much, I might decide to do each one maybe twice a year, one drop per fan. If I try to work out how many drops of oil are left in the can of 3/4 full, I can assume that I will have rid myself of the entire PC and replaced it with a new system inside 5 years from now, and I assume that I will still have that same can.
Now, I may need to use that can of oil for other projects besides that of fan oiling so therefore it can be assumed that I should expect that can to last me at least five years, giving that I've only used it on the fans a total of 70 times, and let's just say 100 drops for a good round number. I'll estimate five hundred drops of oil in the can, so we can assume that I will have oiled 250 fans, twice a year. I'll assume that future purchases of cases and hardware will lead me to owning a good guessed number of 5 fans at any one given time. I think that comes out to 50 years, but now my head hurts and I don't want to think anymore. What the heck was I doing, writing all this crap?

Lol, no wonder you get such low temps :D

He probably has to wear ear protection while using his system...either that or turn the volume WAAAY up. :D

Larry_OHF 08-26-2006 02:32 PM

Yeah...I keep the earphones on. Funny thing is, I removed two fans today because the video card fan is screwed up and I left the panel off so that the card would not get too hot, and that panel has a fan on it...so I am running with two less fans, but the loudness of the fans still in operation is no different than when all are running.

Actually, my case is surprisingly silent. Just shows you how some airflow design and good manufacturing goes a long way :D
And the comment about the oiling, I have heard that in most cases when a fan obviously needs to be oiled, it obviously needs to be replaced.

Oiling doesn't help modern "disposable" fans, I doubt you'll even be able to find a spot to effectively oil an el-cheapo sleeve bearing type fan.

It might be worth oiling a ball bearing type (ie, premium aftermarket) fan if you can find a lube hole, probably under a sticker somewhere.

^what you wrote sounds quite funny when you read it with the other meaning of 'fan' in mind. :D
