I'm doing an assignment for my course in social issues, and want to get the general idea of the IW community whether prostitution should be legilised or illegal.

Here are some good points:

The government could tax and regulate it like other service industries.

Companies who provide prostitution as a service would be forced (by the government) to test prostitutes for STD's, thereby stopping the spread of needless deadly diseases.

Companies who provide prostitution as a service would be forced (by the government) to keep prostitutes safe so their clients did not hurt them.

Ugly people get laid.

This is already more or less happening here.

Well the other side to the prostitution debate is that a 40 year old man having sex with 14 - 18 year old girls with no protection and the spread of STD's, 'thinking' it's a great way to make money from the government by having a child and possibly ending in abortion.

Yes. It's easier to regulate things if they're legal. It was way easier to get pot at my high school (illegal) than to get cigarettes (legal.) It's gonna be there anyway. Get the government some money out of it, and have better control over it.

Like most things, the fact that it may be illegal doesn't stop people from doing it. Not sure how this changes things for the ugly factor though. Last time i checked, beer was still legal.

well if it was legal and regulated, then how would 14 year-olds get involved? They wouldn't. And prositution is least of the reasons why teenagers have kids, lol

also, would lessen the chances of rape if people can have an outlet for sexual urges they cant control (for a price of course)

Vaskez 08-24-2006 09:06 AM

^^very maybe ;)

I doubt it, myself. There are probably other factors involved in rape than just being a bit horny. But who knows.

Sir Krustin 08-24-2006 10:08 AM

Rape is generally a crime of hate, not lust. (excluding possibly date rape)

How so? A guy just hate a girl so much that he raped her? Err....

Actually I think it's a bit more of a control thing... (Heard it somewhere)

Nope, there's plenty of hoochies here, but that doesn't stop the rapists from doing their thing. I think it's the thrill of doing something illegal. When it's available for a price, there's no excitement. It's the same with our liberal law on softdrugs. The people against it argumented that it would become total chaos, kind of Sodom and Gomorra, but the reality is that there are fewer people smoking weed now that it's legal, than back in the days when it was still outlawed. It has become a common thing, and common things become boring pretty fast.

Harkoliar 08-24-2006 10:52 PM

so the legality would reduce the rape because it aint illegal anymore?

kind of a ironic thing to say . heh

Zebodog 08-24-2006 11:49 PM

It is the oldest proffession for a reason. :D

Prostitution isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Legalize it, educate the prostitutes on safe sex and provide free condoms. At the very least the government may make some money and we could reduce the transmission of infectious STD.

Educate not regulate.

However, if made legal all the teens from school would possibly drop school for this job. Aprenticeship needed to join?

They're talking about legalizing prostitution, not underage sex. I also don't think this is a valid carrer choice, like dancers people would only want young women.

Jorath Calar 08-28-2006 03:42 PM

Or to quote Saint Carlin:
"Selling is legal, ****ing is legal, why isn't selling ****ing legal? I mean of all the things you can do to a person giving them orgasm is probably not the worst of them!"

But I think as long as women see it as a "career" and are not forced or sold into it (which is way to common) then I think it's okey although I feel very sorry for the women. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

[sorry if the quote is too graphic, will remove if asked to)

Absolutely, rape is about power, control, and domination, and not about sex. Ever see Boys Don't Cry? They didn't rape Brandon Teena because they lusted after him. They wanted to put him back in his place. It normally happens in the context of heterosexuality, so this goes ignored.

Personally, I like what Sweden did. They made it legal to sell sex, but made it illegal to buy sex. That way, prostitutes could report abusive johns and pimps without fear of being arrested, and turned the issue from a "Women are breaking the law" issue to a "Men are exploiting women" issue.

However, I wouldn't really mind seeing it legalized if it were heavily regulated.

Date rape could be a crime of lust as the guy could feel led on and frustrated. But even then, there's probably an undercurrent of misogyny

</font>
lol, i was reading the Misogyny part, and it says here

Many slang terms that refer to women are considered offensive by some women; such terms have existed throughout history, and change over time. These terms aren't only used by some men, they are also used by some women. Some of those common in contemporary usage are:

Babe: A diminutive or familiar way to address a woman. More commonly said to a partner, in a similar way to "honey" or baby. Historically, baby is the diminutive of babe, but baby has taken its place in all but this and poetic contexts, where it is synonymous.

Bimbo: demeaning way to address a woman. Commonly said to a woman considered to be lacking in intelligence or a woman considered to be sexually attractive or both. Bimbo is the Italian word for baby, which might apply to a male baby (Bimba is the Italian word for a female baby) or baby in general. It was originially used to refer a prostitute working for an Italian organized crime organisation. It's still used by Italians much as the same way as Babe or Baby used by North Americans.

Bird: British English, some women see it as demeaning. Also commonly used in modern Ireland and Australia where it is not considered very demeaning.

Chick: literally a young chicken or young bird of any kind, this term is mildly offensive to some women who interpret it to be infantilizing or objectifying; it is chiefly an Americanism. It is sometimes claimed that the usage derives from the Spanish chica (girl), but neither the Oxford English Dictionary nor Merriam-Webster supports this derivation. The word chick was used in a gender-neutral sense to mean "human child" at least as early as the 14th century. The popularity of the usage in North America may, nonetheless, be due in part to its similarity to the Spanish word.

Sheila: used in Australia.

Skeezer: used in some hip-hop recordings.

quite interesting . I call my Girl honey sometimes, ididnt know its original meaning can be quite different from today

Sometimes Wikipedia really piss me off. Here's an example.

Quote:

Entire cultures may be said to be misogynist if they treat women in ways that can be seen as harmful. Examples include forcing women to tend to all domestic responsibilities, demanding silence from a woman, or beating a woman.[citation needed]
Come on, I understand that you're supposed to use it as a repository of knowledge and not as a platform to express new theories, but that was an example of misoginy, it's doesn't need a quote. What? Are people supposed to compose every single lines of the arcticle using only quotes?
