Can anyone help me decide as to what kit I should choose since i am starting a new game.

You'd better choose the class first ;)

Choose the style of play you prefer - melee, archery, spellcasting whatever. According to that, choose the class. There is no best class/kit in the game, nearly all of them are playable, balanced, and interesting to play. In my opinion, it would be cool to RP an evil, Irenicus-like mage. You know, ignorance for those pathetic peasants... My next solo char will be an evil sorcerer ;)

Zarr 09-16-2002 09:39 AM

If you like melee type characters play a beserker if not try an archer or sorcerer

As one other posted, it would help if you chose a class first!

If hack and slash is your thing, think about the kensai (fighter)
If they have high enough stats, they make a kickass melee fighter even without magical weapons. My kensai routinely dishes out 25+ hp per blow. The main drawback is you can't use armour, shields, or helms. This means you'll have to rely on your dex, potions, spells, and magical rings/amulets to improve your ac.

The archer kit can work too, if you want to stand back (esp. if you plan on dualing to mage later) just make sure you have a tank to block for you.

Personally, I thought the Bard kits weren't worth the effort. My strategy with Bards is to use them for pickpocketing and casters, to supplement both the
mage(s) and thief(ves) in the party. The bard kits, as I recall, all reduce those capabilities in favour of other advantages. YMMV.

Eh, dualing an archer to a mage?? Though I thin everyone would love to do this I rember that rangers (including archers) are only able to dual to clerics.

You remember correctly.

Try a chaotic evil barbarian :D I tried one, and by the time I had hit level 40 and finished ToB(taking all possible evil routes for challenges) he had a natural CON score of 22 and well over 300HP. Combine this with a permament 40% physical damage resistance (see Dundee's post regarding the Defender of Easthaven +3) the rage ability and plenty of hardiness abilities and even on insane difficulty it would take an entire army of enemies to take him down! Good fun!

Oh, also as a Chaotic Evil, with the Ascension Mod (Which Gromnir Has) the Barbarian has the Regeneration Ability in ToB, which means any damage you manage to do is quickly regenerated!

Oh, and Gromnir, you know what I suggest! Sorceror! Don't forget your Shadow Door, Spell Immunity: Abjuration and Divination! Also, Spell Trap and Immunity: Abjuration means Spell Trap cannot be dispelled! Ruby Ray of Reversal only works up to level 8!

True_Moose 09-16-2002 06:31 PM

Take a berserker or barbarian. Tons o' fun. You might also want to try a d/c like Swashbuckler/Mage or something, since there's all of ONE good NPC thief in the game (maybe 2 if you're generous)

If you're not averse to using the grandmastery patch from baldurdash, the Archer isn't a bad one to try. I just started a new game (with the patch) and an elven archer...it's nice to be running around with 5 attacks per round (with tuigan bow + grand mastery in short bows) and a thac0 of something like -1 at level 9...yeah....

Dude, that is the third time within one week you are giving out the same false information!

Ruby Ray of Reversal will dispel the Spell Trap first since it is an Alteration spell and will ignore Spell Immunity:Abjuration.

Incorrect. The mod adds a Fighter kit that mimics an Archer.
