It draws a little more power than the stock heatsink/fan though! :D

Ilander 05-25-2006 12:39 AM

...We all knew it would come to this. :D

robertthebard 05-25-2006 07:29 AM

Yeah, that'll do it.

Am I the only one here who thinks that would be not only incredibly noisy, but also impractical and ineffective? Water cooling systems trump that Big Bad Turbine Mother F***er in every way.

Agreed, and the thing would cost more than the rest of the beastly PC its in anyways.

Not to mention the cost of the case it needs....

Exactly. I've tried just about every stress test I could up to now and the hottest I can get mine is around 30c. If you want to run cool without the risk of ripping the whole retention bracket completely off the mobo, run even a cheap water cooler. Just don't go too cheap...heh

robertthebard 05-26-2006 07:23 AM

So a styrofoam cooler and a bag of ice would be a bad way to go?

Bozos of Bones 05-26-2006 07:33 AM

Styrofoam is a thermo-isolator. Not a good way to go.
A silver tub on the other hand...

andrewas 05-26-2006 07:56 AM

Ice would melt in short order - a high end CPU us putting out a couple of hundred watts of heat.

Also youd get condensation on the outside of the tub. This is A Bad Thing, cos its going to drip onto the motherboard.

Luvian 05-26-2006 08:40 AM

The shops around here claim water cooling is bad and "to get an extra fan, it does a better job". They don't stock any water cooling systems and are resistant to the idea of selling you one. You'd have to get in a fight with them to make them sell you one. :(

robertthebard 05-26-2006 09:55 AM

Maybe they see the water/electricity mix in a bad way. Just like anything though, there is potential for hazardous things happening...

Am I the only one who thinks this is just a laugh?

That's the Zalman CNPS 9500... Just blown up in Photoshop ;)

Hivetyrant 05-26-2006 02:29 PM

Yeah, Callum is right, it turned out to be fake

Update: Ok, so this whole writeup is, uh, crap. See, our fact checking department is on strike (the little bastards!), and as it turns out, the fan you see is a 3:1 mockup of the real thing. What’s more, it draws only 6W of power. And just like that, it’s not so interesting anymore.

Nah, just the only one that thought to point that out. I'm sticking with my styrofoam cooler and ice...

Callum 05-27-2006 06:29 AM

pfft... My wine bottle cooler will trump that!

SpiritWarrior 05-27-2006 11:42 PM

Regular custom fans are good. Zalman is a good maker of both though.
