What kind of music do you like, and then post your favorite Band/Artist of that genre

Keal 03-30-2005 10:21 PM

I have 3 favorites, The Used, My Chemical Romance, and Linkin Park.

Sir Goulum 03-30-2005 10:28 PM

Humz... I don't mind listening to Clapton once in a while.

Keal 03-30-2005 11:08 PM

Loudhy 03-31-2005 04:07 AM

Currently :

Nightwish, Edenbridge and Rammstein.

But my favourite groups often changed within the last years. Of course I have a lot of older groups I still like :

F.e. Deep Purple, Rainbow or ZZ Top.

Brayf 03-31-2005 04:58 AM

I went with rock: Bright Eyes (could've been country, I know), Sonic Youth and The White Stripes to randomly name a few current favourites, and other: Dance music, e.g. Primal Scream, The Faint, Radio 4 etc.

philip 03-31-2005 05:50 AM

I went with other. Depends on where I am but most often it's metal. I don't have a favourite from what I listen and I can't say much about whether I like it but well here are a few:

After Forever, Epica, Finntroll, Wintersun, Children of Bodom. Well that would be about my favourites atm. There are a lot of bands that I only know a few songs of so I can't say much about it but I do like them for now.

Jaradu 03-31-2005 06:56 AM

Rock. Industrial Rock to be specific. ;)

Rammstein, Gorillaz, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse.

pritchke 03-31-2005 11:16 AM

Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden. Oh an whyn wasn't there a metal option? Metal and Rock are entirely different.

Rataxes 03-31-2005 07:52 PM

Rock, mainly of the british/european/canadian school, and indie rock/pop. Favourite bands at the moment are Oasis, Secret Machines, Ambulance Ltd, Futureheads, Arcade Fire and Bloc Party.

Mr. Mopery 04-01-2005 06:08 PM

Elliott Smith
Tori Amos
Cat Power
Iron & Wine

I suppose these would all go in a singer/songwriter category.

Like that Natasha Beddingfield...

Intrepid 04-02-2005 07:47 AM

I like all music (except most rap and some pop, and black pop(new school R&B)), my favourite of all time is probably classic rock, rock, alternative, metal, classical, some country, and whatever you call it.. i suppose genral new age to be vague.
At the moment i'm likeing a lot of 80s.

I hate modern R&B which isn't R&B, but is really black pop, i hate a lot of crap rap, i do like old school rap, but not a lot of the new stuff, and finally i dislike at times some pop.

Vaskez 04-02-2005 10:35 AM

There is an error in the poll. Rap is a subset of hip-hop. Hip-hop is the culture that includes rap, some R&B, MC-ing etc.

I feel sorry for you suckers missing out on some of the best lyrics this planet has seen by umbrella-ing all rap as crap. Naive and short-sighted. Oh well.

It also includes beatboxing and graffiti. I too like rap. K.R.S.O.N.E and Jedi Mind Tricks for example.

Keal 04-02-2005 11:15 PM

Well, where I live it's not that way. They say stuff that contridicts all that stuff. Like i'll say the oly rappers I'll listen to are outkast and kids will all break out like, no there hip hop, like lil jon, snoop dog and twista are rappers, and all that rap crap

Hivetyrant 04-03-2005 07:43 AM

Love rap, Love metal
Recently I have been listening to alot of rammstein and Dimmu Borgir.
Oh and I recently heard Feel good Inc by Gorillaz and I love it...

Begin rant.

Rap is good. I really like the Roots, Madvillain, Public Enemy etc.

Hip-hop, as a culture, is problematic in my opinion. I appreciate the fact that it provides role models and has great artisitic merit (as in poetry-meets-zeitgeist). I can even appreciate the way it alters language--for better or worse, a language which doesn't evolve and adopt is a dying language (take that, Académie française!).

But I cannot respect the way hip-hop (often) glorifies the very aspects of modern, innercity life which keep people living in permanently depressed conditions. People like ODB (I'm not sorry he's gone) who are role models and who tell people they should go out and have 10 kids with different mothers because that's what men do. ODB was an influential clown. Contrast him with RZA, who is smart and talented and, from what I know, a better role-model.

Hip-hop which raps about education as being stupid or a waste of time is, IMHO, 'naive and shortsighted.' The difference between hip-hop and other music cultures is the seriousness with which people take it and the fact that many fans are quite poor. Thus hip-hop culture has a responsibility to be more responsible.

End rant.

(edit: spelling)

There an American metal band. There quite big in the USA I'm suprised you haven't heard of them. Their website is www.toolband.com

The singer of Tool (Maynard James Keenan) is also the singer of another band: A Perfect Circle. I like them too.

However Tool are my favorite band by far, I love them.

Sir Goulum 04-03-2005 06:12 PM

Hm. Never heard of them ever. Not much a fan of metal anyways, so that might be why.

well i'm not a fan of metal really. I like 2 songs by rob zombie, one on the matrix where neo goes in the club and meets trinity(the ending of the third one reminded me of peter pan) and one on need for speed underground. Other than that I don't like much metal. I think that Linkin Park and The used are the best.

Brilliant! Had you heard of them before this song? A lot of my friends can't remember them from their debut, but before their two or three year break, they released an awesome album (An album I also added to the winamp playlist ).

Mack_Attack 04-04-2005 12:36 AM

Well tool is not metal IMHO. Well maybe there first two albums are more heavy. And I agree tool would be my top band of all time. I had a chance to see them a few years back. And that is one hell of a show.

And I also seen Maynard in PC and that was also one amazing show. It might have been more with the state of mind I was in. It was a outdoor show and just as he came on a sun shower started. So you have this amazing band starting and it is raining and sunny at the same time. My mind could not compute all the sensory, ;)

I pretty much hate rap, but some hip-hop stuff is good. Bran Van 3000, for example, are incredible.

I reckon you've never heard a Bran Van 3000-album in full? As I definitely wouldn't describe them as hiphop... They're blending dozens of different styles of modern music into what could be referred to as their signature sound, and hiphop is only one of these.
I agree that they're incredible, though. They're also long overdue for a new album.

Also, I gave up on listing any favourite types of music in particular years ago, as I realized that my musical taste has simply evolved beyond the somewhat narrow-minded need to stick with one category only.
My personal entry at this site at least begins to sum up my current somewhat eclectical interests, though, even though it's still far from giving a complete overview.

Wow.
I hope you were posting this as social commentary as to how retarded lyrics tend to get when people try to voice lame generalizations, because these are just silly. I can imagine some 12 year olds sniggering because of these, though...

I like it how you're ripping on some of the bands that were listed by others, but are still brave enough to name some of the most reviled bands among anyone older than 16 as your favourites*. ;) It's nice of you to have developed a taste in music at the age of twelve, but I doubt that makes you an expert on the suckiness of bands that you will most likely come to appreciate in a few years time regardless, though, if teenagers stay as predictable in their music tastes as they are nowadays**. Don't take my words the wrong way, but I do think you'll find your music taste evolving over the years, and you may have to eat those words some day. I know I had to.*** ;)

<font size=0>
* Cheap dig that isn't really true, of course. My youngest brother is 17 and still a big LP-fan, though it does tend to lose the factor of "coolness" somewhat once you're confronted with other kinds of music at that age. ;)
** Because if I have to be honest, I can pretty much guess the ages of many posters here, purely because they write to have suddenly discovered Rammstein or Metallica, or simply by their use of language to describe their favourite band. I'm not saying that it's a flawless system, nor that people automatically stop listening to certain bands when they've reached a certain age (as some people simply get "stuck" in their taste at some point because they're busy pursuing other interests), but it's mostly an observation that many young people simply tend to go through certain phases of musical taste that are somewhat predictable. ;)
*** Of course, with wholly different kinds of bands, as I was twelve waaaay back in 1993.
