How many languages do you speak. not necessarily fluently, just undarstand and can carry a discussion in.

Stormymystic 06-30-2004 01:22 AM

well I chose 1, mostly because I can only count in 2 other languages, and then it is not very high ;) so yeah I only speak 1 language and am not very good at that one :D

Mack_Attack 06-30-2004 01:29 AM

With you on that one Stormy. I speak only one. I tnink alot of North Americans only speak one. When I was in Europe it seemed like most people speak many different ones. I would like to speak french or something but just never got around to do anything about it. ;)

Lauren 06-30-2004 04:06 AM

I can speak French and Greek. French I learnt in school (did 5 years of it), Greek I learnt from my mother...but I'm not that good comprehending it sometimes because Greek's speak so fast.

Well my mother is hungarian and my dad english so that is two languages. I learnt french and russian at school and I took some private lessons for german. And this year I studied spanish at university, so that would make six, but german, spanish and russian are not too good.

Arledrian 06-30-2004 06:34 AM

I speak three, english, dutch, and german. The last two I studied for about 12 years so I'm nearly fluent in both.

Loudhy 06-30-2004 07:05 AM

Lets see:

1 German ( of course )
2 English ( I hope )
3 French ( very, very little ), but I survived 3 days in France after my car had a breakdown in Paris :D .

Xen 06-30-2004 07:07 AM

English, Italian.

Melusine 06-30-2004 07:08 AM

I used to be able to say four, but my French has grown incredibly rusty through lack of use. :( And I always find it annoying when people think they speak sooo many languages when in reality their grasp of most of them turns out to be very tenuous indeed. So I'll say three: English, Dutch and German. I can still read and understand French moderately well though - just wouldn't know if I'm still able to speak it in any understandable way. :D

Jorath Calar 06-30-2004 07:14 AM

So I answer my own question, I'll say 2. Icelandic and English. Although I understand written german and danish (talking danish in impossible to understand for anyone ) and I know some spanish although not nearly enough to be fluent in it

Grojlach 06-30-2004 02:26 PM

I'm able to read in French and German just fine, but haven't actually spoken either of them in 7 years or so (and I've got relatives in France, go figure) - so for now it's just two (English and Dutch), perhaps three if you count dialects (Brabants). Though I refuse to acknowledge any proficiency in the latter. ;)

I chose 2, English and Dutch. I have had German and French at school but I think it's not much. After 4 years of French the school exam was about buying stuff at the baker's and in a restaurant. For German you had to book a holiday. That doesn't qualify as speaking a language for me.

I can read German and French and get most of it though.

I would agree, I said only one. My French is very rusty and poor. Occassionaly I can make out a conversation if I am familiar with a few words, or sentances. I Can barly speak it, and if I did it would probaly be like more of a small child. If you don't practice it enough you lose it.

I guess in a way, I had a bad time in school, in order to learn a language, you need to hear it, and I had a hard time hearing the teacher in french class, so of course I failed it, and they took me out of it and put me in art class, but I didn't do to wel in school at all :D

Aerich 06-30-2004 04:04 PM

Anglais et francais. Mais comme quelques autres, je vais perdre ma lang secondaire.

I starred in a couple of intensive French courses in my undergrad, but I'm starting to lose it now. Most of my French-speaking friends have moved out of town or lost touch with me, so I hardly use it anymore.

I still said two, though.

Svaerdhelgon 06-30-2004 06:34 PM

I speak Swedish,English and German so 3

RoSs_bg2_rox 07-01-2004 01:00 PM

2, English and German.

Black Baron 07-01-2004 01:37 PM

Russian (i was born in moscow), hebrew, english, german (learned from my grandpa) and literature arabic (the one that is in the news and not on the street. they are diferent. Studied 6 years in school). So it is 4.5, exactly as i stated. :D

Eagle eye 07-02-2004 05:54 AM

French, English and Japanese

Black Baron 07-02-2004 08:16 AM

Japanese? Cool. How did you learn it?

shadowhound 07-02-2004 08:48 AM

English and some German.

Dreamer128 07-02-2004 01:06 PM

Dutch, English and a bit of German. Although I rarely speak German, parts of the readers we use at college are in German, and I don't usually have trouble reading them. Still, I doubt I'd be able to carry a dinner conversation in that language ;)

uss 07-02-2004 07:32 PM

I can speak Estonian and English. I study Russian(3 years and going) at school and Japanese(1 year and going strong) at home. When I get to the 10'th grade(1 year), I'll get the oppritunity to study French, German and Spanish, from which I think I'll choose French.

I also know a very small bit of Finnish from watching Finnish TV. :D

If all goes well, when I'm an adult, I should be able to speak in a minimum of 5 languages. ;) Being the freak I am, my current highest priority is Japanese. :D

Would that be English after you flatten all the vowels and throw the R away (thanks proclaimers)

Bahamut 07-03-2004 11:31 AM

I can speak two fluently which is Filipino and English. I know a little Japanese. I want to learn more on Japanese though... my ex is learning french so I can grasp a bit of french also... the gender thing has got me all crazy!

Yeah, and I heard they've scrapped the word "gullible" from the dictionary as well.

Whatever.

Right. Belive me or not OK? We`re only humans Groj we make mistakes. To make it up I`ll do whatever it takes.

Vaskez 07-07-2004 09:37 AM

Hungarian and English fluently. I can hold basic conversations in German and understand a lot of what I read (though not necessarily as good in speech). So I said 3. I also know basic French - studied for 3 years but have forgotten almost everything. I can get by in shops and hotels in France but speaking more in sentence fragments than actual sentences :D so I guess that doesn't count.

Bahamut 07-07-2004 10:00 AM

Well Vask at least you can speak French... in a way. You will be able to get around France still... and whichever country has french in it ;)

J'aran 07-07-2004 10:28 AM

Frisian, Dutch and English, so three. My German and French are too rusty to be of anything but rudimentary use.

catzenpewters 07-07-2004 04:13 PM

Hmm... about 1.3 or something like that.

Obviously I speak English (ye olde native tongue).

I also speak some French (took many years of it in school but have forgotten a great deal of it).

I'm also learning to speak Russian, which is challenging.

Wish I could speak 'em all.

Larry_OHF 07-08-2004 07:39 AM

I think most people here know that I speak Spanish as a second language, but I have not told many of you that I also learned enough Mizteco Indian to carry a conversation. The Miztecos are an indigenous group, originating in the mountain region of Central or Southern Mexico, and are closer decentants of the Aztecs, from what I have been able to figure out.

aleph_null 07-09-2004 12:59 AM

3: English, Spanish, Italian

I would say Portugese too, but I'm so horrible it's not worth counting :D

Mr. Mopery 07-23-2004 05:52 AM

English: fluently
Polish: can discuss most things
Spanish: rusty, though I recently had a lovely chat with a guy about his aspiration to become a harbourmaster...
Thai: numbers, restaurant stuff, haggling skills

edit: forgot about Hindi...I know a couple pretty nasty things in Hindi
