Due to the debate some members (including myself) are having about Diablo 1 & 2 in the Gen Con. Forum, I've decided to create a related poll.

pcgiant 08-03-2003 05:57 AM

It is quite clearly NOT an RPG.

Yep. Hack'n'slash. There's no plot except kill everything, get a few special items, and kill some more.

Thank God life isn't like a game of Diablo or I wouldn't be able to see where the f***** I'm goin'!! I'd be tripping over things, getting lost behind buildings, etc! I think that if they're going to do a bird's eye view in these Diablo games, they should have something that can allow you to see where the f*** you're going: Like a Camera angle button!

RoSs_bg2_rox 08-03-2003 10:42 AM

Ha! no one has put it as rpg. thats because IT ISN'T!!!!!!!!!

True_Moose 08-03-2003 01:32 PM

Hack'n'slash. C'mon, anybody calling it an RPG, you're just kidding yourselves. It's basically an RTS.

I'm not slamming the game, but it's not an RPG.

Xen 08-03-2003 03:07 PM

No it is not and RPG/FRP. It is a FPS! :D

Really. jsut kill,rest,buy,kill,rest,buy,kill,res,buy,kill,rest ,buy.

OK there is a LOT of havk`n`slash in IWD series too but it is FRP.

Diablo....Maybe in another life...dream on Blizzard. :D

Kakero 08-03-2003 04:59 PM

Diablo is an rpg alright. Have you ever heard of hack and slash genre? like duh?just go check www.gamefaqs.com or even www.gamespot.com . which genre is it on? also try checking whether hack and slash genre exist?

Nanobyte 08-04-2003 03:45 AM

In simple terms, yes. You have to remember that an RPG is one where a person is allowed to take on the role of a character. Besides that and killing nasties, these two games lack practically everything else that makes a good RPG.

According to that definition, doesn't that usually apply to story-driven action games too?

Nanobyte 08-04-2003 04:41 PM

I suppose. Being able to customize the character as well, I guess.

</font>
Then I suppose that Deus Ex and System Shock 2 are RPG's as well. At least it says so on the package.

it kinda has a story but its a hack'n'slash

Xen 08-15-2003 04:40 PM

Deus Ex is absolutely. Diffrent ends, building character.
I did not play SS 2 so I cannot tell.

Dreamer128 08-16-2003 06:28 AM

*shrugs* I find there to be very little roleplaying in the Diablo games.
"You have to remember that an RPG is one where a person is allowed to take on the role of a character." wouldn't that mean that 99% of all available games currently qualify as roleplaying games? Duke Nuke 'em a roleplaying game? Well.. you do take on the role of an egocentric sociopath. Doom a roleplaying game? Hm.. don't you pick up the part of a brave space marine? I don't think the Diablo games qualify as roleplaying games any more then these ones.

Of course you assume the role of a character in about every video game, but the real factor here ares attributes. Only games with character attributes and experience are called rpgs.

To me, Diablo is an "action rpg" as are Icewind Dale, Deus Ex, Divine Divinity, Arx Fatalis, Might and Magic and any other rpg focused more on fighting and exporation than dialogs.

"Real" rpgs are games like Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Final Fantasy...

Luvian you nailed this one without even trying! :D

IMO, RPGs that focus on fighting/exploration are hack'n slash, but not necessarily "action." If the fighting requires more perception'n reflexes than tactics'n strategy, I'd say it's action... therefore I wouldn't say that fer example IWD is action...

BaRoN NiGhT 08-18-2003 12:28 AM

<font color="cc0099">RPGs are actually divided into various types.you cant say that Diablo is not an RPG 'cause it doesn't contain rpg things as much as baldurs.yes of course, we have to admit that baldurs gate is a heavier rpg than diablo, but that doesn't mean that diablo games are not rpgs.

and i actually like to say baldurs gate series as 'half turned base-half realtime' rpg instead of 'real' RPG.

Xen 08-18-2003 05:53 AM

Well it`s each to his own I suppose.

Still I like BG series the most.
