Arnabas 10-31-2002 10:37 AM

My wife and I never learned how to swim. We decided that we'd go learn at the "Y" and my poor, misguided wife bought me a Speedo.
I tried to explain that nobody wears them anymore (except athletes)and that I never did and never would wear one. She says she hates the boxer-style ones and that guys should wear them.
I tried it on and... Well...
Any thoughts?

Redblueflare 10-31-2002 10:43 AM

Umm... I've never actually worn one, I prefer the boxers . I bet the speedo's wouldn't fall down as much. *cough*

Speedos! "Ah! My eyes! They burn!" Why anyone came up with this is beyond me. Especially since the wrong people always wear them and it makes it much worse. I wouldn't touch them with a 20-foot pole, myself. Besides, I couldn't imagine them looking good on a thin guy like me. I much prefer the shorts style.

Oh man. I hope I don't have nightmares now.

Arnabas 10-31-2002 03:33 PM

Heh. The votes so far are about what I would have expected. Wonder what our Australian members would say. I am told they are more common there.

The Ornery One 10-31-2002 09:54 PM

I think more guys look best in boxer style shorts. Not those things that hang down past your knees though. And no light you-can see-through-when-wet colors either.

antryg 10-31-2002 10:20 PM

Arnabas-
You should have had an option (I am male) on question 3 if you want to find out what women think.
When I went to Texas A&M those (male) taking swimming as a PE elective were required to wear speedos. "Oh the pain. My eyes! My eyes!"

Mack_Attack 11-01-2002 12:42 AM

Well I hope you do not have to wear them. I care not to see a guys package

Cool poll I give you credit for the nerve to make it. ;)

Angelousss 11-01-2002 01:08 AM

only if i was being paid

i voted no, on the ladies only because i'm male and it wouldn't let me submit if i didn't vote

johnny 11-01-2002 03:55 AM

Speedo's actually taste pretty good on white bread with some mayonaise. :D

Arnabas 11-01-2002 10:31 AM

I thought this poll might get a reaction.
This seems to be one of those topics that people feel strongly about. Lol
I think the average guy runs away screaming when presented with a Speedo.
Anyone remember the swimsuit scene in "Somtheing About Mary"?

Sir Goulum 11-01-2002 06:02 PM

I'd rather have torture than wear a speedo!

Legolas 11-04-2002 07:19 AM

Oh, I must say I find the poll results so far somewhat shocking ;)
Of course there is nothing wrong with preferring not to wear a certain piece of clothing yourself, but it seems many of the voters actually think the speedo so terrible noone should ever be able/allowed to wear one.
This is a fine example of tyranny in the clothing world, where those who wear a speedo are ridiculed by those wearing other items. Boxer Tyranny, in this case.

Along the same lines, let me just point to the current-day general opinion on kilts. They too are being suppressed by another piece of clothing, giving rise to the infamous Trouser Tyranny.

Exactly like the speedo and kilt, many other potentially wonderful clothing articles are being pushed to dark corners of stores, or even removed altogether.

This leads to a point where those who were formerly happy to wear, say, a speedo, are now forced to wear boxers instead, and are thus made into slaves, forbidden to wear what they like and forced to wear what they do not.
Eventually, we'll end up in a society where there is no choice in clothing.

Let me just point out that this development appears to mysteriously apply only to men's clothing. Noone today dares dismiss a woman's rights to choose to wear both skirts AND trousers, and likewise in the swimsuit department there seems to be no unrest.

Oh, and I just have to point out the wearing of make-up as well, for one of my allies in the fight against this tyranny. Why is it that women, young girls and even very young boys can smear anyhting they like upon their faces without anyone saying a word (except in the very young boy situation, the age at which the proTyrannical Movement tries to ensure none of the boys growing up will want to wear make-up ever again) whilst men doing so are mocked?

Stop ridiculing on impulse, and say NO to all clothing tyrannies!

AliCat 11-06-2002 12:03 AM

I think I have a rather unique perspective on this, having not only much beach time, but as I spend eight hours a week in a swimming pool.

Firstly, being a woman, I have spent a good portion of my life wearing Speedos, as it's a very good quality swimsuit (nyah, nyah!).

I would faaaaaaar prefer seeing an athletic man or boy wear Speedos than boxers. It's much more athletic in appearance, and looks FINE (and I mean "ooh, baby, fine") on a good swimmer. Boxers look unprofessional. But then, I'm talking about people who are actually going to swim, not pose.

Furthermore, as for "displaying your package" or whatever way you phrase that, I can still remember as a teen sitting on a dock with some friends and one of the guys was in boxers, which gapped open so much (and he had no clue) that every little bit of his funny bits was exposed, which was totally gag-worthy and off-putting.

So... Arnabas, since she's spent the money, just wear the suit and wear a pair of regular shorts over it. Problem solved.

Sorcerer Alex 11-06-2002 12:28 AM

I know I have a decent body, so I wouldn't be unconfident in that respect. It's just that I prefer shorts/boxers; they're far more comfortable, and they look better, in my opinion.

chrisofthedale 11-08-2002 03:46 AM

i can even wear short gym shorts without getting a wedgie

Lavindathar 11-08-2002 06:04 AM

Never ever ever where a Speedo. They suck major ass!

Downunda 11-08-2002 01:56 PM

I'd wear 'em! With pride! :D

SomeGuy 11-08-2002 08:38 PM

I'd wear one. :D

Phil, I think you should submit a photo of yourself (on Stealthy's) in a speedo and set the standard.

Here I come from GenCon, trying to get away from mental images of LoA in his underwear, just to find SomeGuy in a speedo. Yuck

Gabriel 11-09-2002 11:32 PM

Speedo no... a thong on the other hand..

Arnabas 11-15-2002 08:57 AM

Hmmm... Thongs... I guess in comparison, Speedos aren't too bad. When we were on our honeymoon in Cuba, I saw at least 2 guys wearing thongs on the beach. Up until then, I didn't know they even MADE thongs for men.

adam warlock 11-16-2002 08:04 PM

*tries to imagine a 400-lb gentleman wearing a speedo*

....

wellard 11-26-2002 05:59 AM

I dont mind wearing speedo's because

1).. they are an oz invention

2).. my beer gut hides them

3). they cant look to bad because women never seem to stop and stare at me when i wear them.

4)... nobody can see my package anyway

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

wellard 12-01-2002 09:34 PM

My wife just read this and suggested i wear the shorts

Blind_Prophet 12-02-2002 05:42 PM

I would do it for a high dollar amount and thats the only way.

Ronn_Bman 12-02-2002 05:46 PM

I'm changing my vote to yes, but it's a conditional change.

I would only wear a speedo to punish someone in a cruel and inhuman manner.

Who ? Yourself ?

Ronn_Bman 12-02-2002 06:43 PM

No, I might enjoy it.

The cruel and inhuman punishment would be inflicted upon anyone within visual range.

My body in a speedo is a weapon, but it's not a smart weapon. ;) :D

johnny 12-02-2002 07:59 PM

Ah, you use it to blind people, is that what you're saying ? :D

GokuZool 12-03-2002 05:33 AM

Would I wear a Speedo?

NOOOOO!! Never!

I go to the beach often (living in Australia duh ) and most people wear the shorts except for old people (shudders) and swim fanatics. (shudders)

Arnabas 12-03-2002 10:14 AM

Well, on the plus side here, I've told my wife that I'll wear the Speedo on 2 conditions:
1. I have to get in better shape first
2. She has to wear either a) a thong or b) a g-string (after giving birth, of course)

She has agreed, so I guess It's a Speedo for me!

As a competitive swimmer in Australia I couldn't imagine not wearing speedo's in the water or at the beach. They are quite common here & most people wouldn't think they were anything out of the ordinary.
If you really are that self conscious about your body just put a pair of shorts on or rap a towel around your waist when you get out of the pool.
Those new swim suits that the best Australian swimmers are using now might be a bit more to your taste. Even the most prudish person couldn't object to a neck to ankle swimsuit.

Luvian 12-26-2002 02:29 AM

I would object. It's too tight.

Arnabas 12-27-2002 11:17 AM

Actually, now that I've worn it, I don't find it too bad. Never liked the way my other swimsuit felt clinging to me when wet, so this seems better. A number of younger kids seem to be wearing them now where I go, so I am not alone.

9_1_6 01-02-2003 12:53 AM

NNNNNEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR!

lucius 01-08-2003 06:55 PM
