What's the absolute worst RPG you've ever played? My vote goes to Everquest. To much down time(healing, meding, waiting for spawns), broken economy(sure I'll pay 185pp for a dagger; making nothing but cp at 10th lvl ;) ). I think its a cool concept, but they killed it. Hopefully Horizons will do better. *Crosses Fingers*
Oh yeah, my vote for worst pen and paper game goes to Toon, lol what a silly little game that was .

dominions 01-16-2002 06:23 AM

On-line RPG'ing? Well, I'd have to say the Wheel of Time MUD. That stank! As for stand-alone on the PC: DungeonKeep (sanctioned by TSR) - Utter rubbish and massive waste of good money.
Paper 'n Pencil ones: I've only played AD&D (2nd Ed.), Alternity, and Marvel Super Heroes (great if you don't take it at all seriously). I haven't come across one that's really bad. Yet.

Worst RPG?

Well, it's not the worst, but I belived the hype so I bought that
silly little game called NOX. Yuck that was one ugly, bad stupid unoriginal piece of "you-know-what".

Bought it when it was brand new so it sett me back quite a bit.

Just gimme a couple off days and I'll remember something much worse

Sir Byronas 01-16-2002 08:34 AM

Nox was one of the worst RPGs I've played. I just didn't like it...

Phantom of might and magic 01-16-2002 10:39 AM

Yeah NOX sucked.
Its like Diablo only much worse.
brrrrr........

fable 01-16-2002 11:28 AM

I remember NOX, and it wasn't an RPG: it was a realtime action game.

Bad RPGs? There was one terrible port from a Japanese product about two years ago called Blaze and Blade: one of the dullest games I've ever seen, with an interface that was so convoluted I spent more time learning that than playing the thing.

Sorcerer Alex 01-16-2002 06:36 PM

I didn't like Icewind Dale one bit. Sure it's not soo bad in graphics, sound or gameplay, I was just used to Baldur's Gate and then playing Icewind Dale was just a letdown.

Erydian 01-17-2002 09:02 AM

I seriously question whether MMORPGs like Everquest should be called RPGs in the first place. It's sort of hard to role-play in a setting where there is never anything going on (except guild politics and cyber dating) and when the entire game is based on power-gaming. Then there are the hordes of people running around with the most unimaginative names possible whose idea of role-playing constitutes greeting people with "Hail", then proceeding to talk about their day at work, and what the guild is going to be "camping" on that particular evening.

That being said, the worst MMORPG I've played is Anarchy Online. Everquest might have been boring and time consuming, but at least it worked. It's pretty bad when you take the game out of the box, go to install it, have it crash halfway through installation repeatedy, and then find out that everyone else you know has had the same problem. :D I won't even go into the actual gameplay issues.

The worst single-player (or not online) RPG that I've played (albeit not for long) was Magic and Mayhem (pretty sure that's what it was called). I don't know where they got their voice actors or their writers, but let's just say that there was no way I could have taken that game seriously.

Manwe 01-17-2002 11:09 AM

Well, the most boring CRPG i have is Silver...

Redblueflare 01-17-2002 12:56 PM

Orphen. That game had horrible, I mean horrible voice acting. There was no sound most of the time, and it was really difficult to stay awake.

Jorath Calar 01-19-2002 04:06 PM

Well I hate to say it but I liked Nox... a bit
but I loved Icewindale.

Hoever there was a game I tried out sometime ago called Descent to undermountain, wow that stank

fable 01-19-2002 06:06 PM

Ultima IX: Ascension was also claimed as a CRPG, but it wasn't: it was just an incredibly buggy first person action game. Marketing as a CRPG meant that Origin Systems got to p!ss off two groups of players instead of one, which was truly brilliant.

D*Ranged 01-20-2002 06:32 AM

wizards & warriors: gave up on it due to the MASSICE frustration w/interface. TOO hard to even get started!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jorath Calar 01-20-2002 09:51 AM

I should also mention Rage Of Mages 2 it stank worse than and Turkish Goatcheese on a hot summerday

Darkman 01-21-2002 12:55 PM

Well like Jorath, I actually liked Nox, and Icewind Dale is good so far (I just started it though). The worst RPG (or so called RPG) game that I've played is probably Darkstone. First of all, I can't stand 3D games, especially when they are so poorly done. I would much rather be looking down at a blob of pixels from my 3rd person isometric perspective (where I can still use my imagination) than staring at a crude polygonal object with one shade of coloring that is supposed to be my character. That being said, Darkstone was a sorry attempt to clone the essence of Diablo 1--which is not exactly an easy feat seeing how not even D2 could accomplish that. Darkstone was like Diablo with bad 3D graphics, a shoddy combat system, and a horrible interface. I admit that Nox was more than a little corny, but it was fun. The interface system was outstanding, the graphics were nice and smooth. You could interact with the environment by moving and breaking things and putting out fires. You could run and jump, which lent itself to some interesting combat. Speaking of which, I think many people here have misconceptions about what a RPG game really is. Just because a game's combat system is not turn based or D&D compatible does not automatically make that an action arcade hack & slash game. You do just as much fighting in Baldur's Gate as you do in Nox, it's just a different style of fighting. Nox is every bit an RPG, but because it's story line is corny and it's combat is real time, it gets labled a Diablo clone action game when in fact it has nothing to do with Diablo and is actually more of a story driven game than a lot of RPG's out there.

*gets off soap box*

To sum up... Darkstone = poorly done piece of rubbish trying to make a buck off Diablo's unexplained success

Mouse 01-21-2002 03:19 PM

I disagree with everything you said about Darkstone, Darkman.

IMHO it's a totally addictive, simple yet immersive triumph :D

Guess it's different strokes for different folks, huh??

Tormentor 01-21-2002 04:22 PM

Fallout (a time limit? geez!!)
Dink smallwood (FUN!!! but the fighting NAAH!!)

Thoran 01-21-2002 07:32 PM

Ultima IX is the first RPG that I didn't finish... so buggy that I just couldn't get through it... it was also a big letdown after the excellence of the early Ultima games.

I liked NOX, not as good as Diablo II but better than Diablo IMO.

Pool of Radiance 2 is the worst RPG I've played (I wouldn't consider Ultima IX an rpg at all)

Kian 01-22-2002 05:01 AM

Wheel of time......

Was that a RPG ?

Loved the books and then I bought this "so full of crap" game

Wasn't even worth those 9,99$

Lord Killjoy 01-22-2002 09:18 AM

I may get hammered for this one but any Might and Magic after the 3rd. I mean how many quest can you have going at the same time before you start taking a basball bat too the monitor. What was the MM6 with the werewolves in the cave Come' on already I went through therapy sessions and my hair fell out doing that one.

Recedingly yours,

Lord Killjoy

Professor 01-25-2002 04:43 PM

Definitely Ultima IX.

It was so lame.
I was furious two hours into the game.
After 3 hours, I was laughing at the absurdity.

Ziroc 01-25-2002 06:21 PM

Some that come to mind are:

1. Dungeon Keep (Same as the other guy here--looked 'cool' on the old 3DO console, but sucked rocks.

2. My close friend 'Decent to Undermountain'.. ah yes, waiting 2 years thinking it would be awesome, turned into a total joke. didn't even support the 3dfx card.

3. Prophecy of the Shadow' One of SSI's last sucky RPG's.

4. Ultima 9--I am split here, because it looked (and still does) totally awesome) but needed a P4 2Ghz with 1 gig of ram 2 YEARS ago to run right, and the bugs were such a joke, they reburned the 1st CD, and sent it out to registered users. (And closed their FORUM because it was 99% flames) lol.. I MAY play it through someday.

Anyone else??

Gabriel 01-25-2002 07:18 PM

Ultima Underworld 2 (Going way back here I know but hey it still a pc game I know of a lot of non-pc game that bite eggs.) Well UW1 was great fun and well hard, okay really hard I never did find that spritual iteam. But two was just pants on ice, go to all these worlds then destory the links frankly I gave in when faced by stick figures in battle, and it look just the same graphical as one what a waste.

I think it may furnish a useful interrogation tool with terrorists, provided it's done quietly by the military and no humanitarian organizations find out. That was one awful game, IMO. And not even an RPG, as promised.

Lord Shield 01-26-2002 09:23 AM

I see most people have posted Computer RPGs. For PNP I would use:

MERP/Rolemaster (far too many damned tables)

Fighting Fantasy (the original version - I quite liked the 'Advanced' one)

Helspanth 01-26-2002 12:20 PM

Lord Shield is right!
In MERP/Rolemaster you had to consult the tables even when you wanted to walk!!!!!
THAT was by far the worst I had the misfortune of playing!

Lord Shield 01-27-2002 10:13 AM

I remember you got Experience points for travelling and you had to remember how many times you'd done that trip because the xp value was less each time - that sucked

K T Ong 01-27-2002 12:08 PM

I nominate Daggerfall. The dungeons all look alike and are little more than confusing jumbles of worm tunnels. The outdoors are also too featureless and have nothing special for you to discover. Also, the game's too biased against non-magic-users.

That was a COOL level! Ultima Underworld series was my #1 favorite.. TOTALLY Awesome game.. Was the 1st REAL 3D game (used sprite based 3d) but man.. and before Wolf3D too..

WOLFGIR 01-29-2002 05:14 AM

For computer game I would have to say Summoner, clumsy game and well the graphics was kinda.. cubish and well not at all that fun, and the level up bit was kinda pointless.. Too much of Diablo, too little of the good diablo bits and well the setting and atmosphere were kinda dull..

There are probably worse, Like Final Fantasy 7 (if you can call that a rolepalying game) and that Japanese influenced one with a cyberpunk.destroyed earth future thing.. Really awful..

For the pen and paper.. Hmm, Twilight 2000. No roleplaying really, a matter of destroying enemies and crappy system and unrealistic making of characters and the combat system made a couple of friends and myself close to fall weeping! ;)

Merp is also a bad example, too many lists, referance tables and stuff that kills the flow...

Dreamer128 01-29-2002 04:23 PM

Whats with all the NOX bashing? Ok, maybe it wasnt the best RPG ever. But it was still alot better then Diablo! At least it had some kind of storyline! Bigest dissapointment was probably Lands of LoreII. It was nice, but not nearly as good as I.

Warhammer 02-06-2002 09:58 AM

Might and Magic 8!! <-- CRAP

Closely followed by Ultima 9 and Might and Magic 7.

Garnet FalconDance 02-06-2002 10:08 AM

RE. Darkstone--I love it! It was my first crpg......the graphics aren't too bad (altho the storyline is a bit too lineal for me) and you *can* always create your own quest if you'd like.

RE. IWD, love it, can't wait for IWD2

RE. Daggerfall...well, I just dled this one and (as I'm reminded by the boys every two minutes!) haven't quite got the commands down yet . They've offered to make an attack key for me but thus far end up laughing so hard at my death that no such key has been done!

Worst game? Well, Budha got Odium, thought it looked good. *Absolute* waste of money!!! Yuck, gag, wretch! Masters of Orion rates right up there with it, IMO.

Redblueflare 02-11-2002 01:27 PM

Uh, Wolfgir did you just say Final Fantasy 7? I loved that game and played through it nine times! It's the type of rpg you usually see for a console. I guess some people just don't like those kind though...

GEEK 02-12-2002 10:15 PM

I agree with Lord Shield, Rolemaster is the worst game. I felt like I should have a corporate lawyer on hand the first time I played it.
