Don't know why I was thinking about this, but what would you consider the 5 greatest inventions of Mankind to be?

My 5 would be (in no particular order)
1) Internal Combustion Engine...allowed for the further development of all other engines
2) Computer...where would we 'really' be if everything were still done with pen/paper and a slide-rule?
3) Microscope...led to huge advances in medicine
4) Telescope...allows us to think beyond our world and see the nature of existance in which we live
5) Written language...self-explanatory http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

1. Steam engine. This one came first and led to other engines. No airplanes, no cars, no boats, without engines.
2. Computer. No IW, without a cpu.
3. Vaccine. Nearly wiped out several diseases. Polio, Malaria, etc...
4. Telephone. Can you visit a friend who lives in a different country everyday? No.
5. Lightbulb. Flammable lanterns, and unreliable candles? I think not.

1. OK, not an invention but curiosity. Without it, nothing of the above.. I know this one is cheesy and breaking it but I still feel it deserves a good place here.
2. Written language, first way to communicate.
3. Internet, no internet no all you interesting people here!
4. Computer, neede all though I usually sit swearing at them most of the day..
5. Microscope, to see and find out more about what is in there instead of out there http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

The flushable toilet, of course! There´s nothing of greater importance, followed by Calvin and Hobbes.

With each kill, I grow wiser, and with added wisdom, I grow stronger. Does anybody have any idea what this means?

Mouse 08-18-2001 06:39 AM

Just to be pedantic, I presume that by "inventions", we mean things created. The others (fire, etc.) were there all along and thus are more properly termed "discoveries"

P.S. Just for the record, it is Saturday a.m. and I am very slightly hungover http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

yeah the written word is great, but what cave would we be living in if some bright individual hadn't figured out to give things names and start a spoken language?
