Here's a question for ya? Do you believe in Fate? I must admit i'm a little split on the issue. Although sometimes I hate to believe my life is already decided for me, sometimes it sure feels that way. What does everyone else think?

I've had too many coincidences or deja vus in my life not to believe there's some sort of pattern, but I don't necessarily believe that it rules one's life. I guess I believe there's a pattern, and some small part of our brain senses it so that sometimes we flow quite strangely into the pattern, and sometimes we don't follow the pattern at all.

You remember the movie "Six Degrees" or "Six Degrees of Separation"? (Will Smith, Stockard Channing) I don't entirely think I agree, but... it's got a point.

Lady Avalon 06-05-2001 06:45 PM

I definitely believe in fate. We chart our life before we come here. Of course, that doesn't mean those things are in stone. You do have plenty of options here on earth.

Fljotsdale 06-05-2001 07:54 PM

Er.... NO!
Lots and lots of things influence our lives - genes, parenting, external events, things we read, things we do, things we experience, decisions we make...
There are things we have no control over, things we have SOME control over, things we control...
But none of these things is Fate, if, by Fate, you mean that your life is planned out for you in advance and there is nothing you can do about it. If that were the case, then you never need bother how you cross a road, for example, 'cos if you are not 'fated' to die/get hurt, you won't, no matter how much traffic there is, lol!
Now, I know some of you will think I'm being facetious (sp), but I am actually making a serious point. Fate or no, we TAKE CARE on the roads! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif

There is this miniscule bug see, and he lives his entire life in a persian rug.
All the while going about his business and never knowing that he lived and died in this rug, this beautifully crafted thing. Never once knew that he lived and died in something that had a pattern.

I could't agree more with Fljotsdale on this one, especially on the pont of genetics, in any case I certainly dont believe in fate, and think we control our own destiny, otherwise what would be the point !

As a freaking Scientist
I made a nice theorie
We can calculate the way we do thing and the way other people react to it
thus we can see into the future and know what is gonna happen
why don't we?
well we now don't have the ability to exame brains to see how they will react to what
And well to calculate one second (coz you have got to calculate everysecond to make it work) we need years and years to calculate and thus it would be easier to see what jjust happens http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

but no i think the there is no faith
nothing was meant to be
The life is a clutch of Accidents
but is that such a bad thing?

Depends on what you mean and how you define fate. I think most people has their own twist of it. To some parts I believe in it, like a general twisst of events that os more or less a factor of the unknown and that which we canīt see and understand, and in everyday dy life.. Acts and deads make "fate" so it is also a byproduct of what do do daily.. So well. Believe in it, depends on what you put to it and what you put in to it.

Fljotsdale, you know that you and I disagree wholeheartedly on this point. It just goes back to our discussions, doesn't it? Having my cake and eating it too. No, I really don't think so. Yes, our lives have been planned out and charted for us, but we are ones who do all the planning before we come to this earth. That doesn't mean that once we are here, we will change our mind about some little thing. I'm not talking big scale here because you can't change that.

Absolutely not. I believe that you make your own life, and that "fate" (IMHO) is an excuse that some folks use to make excuses as to why their lives are not what they evision(ed) them to be.

My belief is that nothing is pre-ordained and if you want something to happen, you've got to go out and make it happen...

If you view fate as deterministic, no I don't...that's static. Neither do I believe in pure chaos. There's a blend, a mixture; an equilibrium between the two states.

There are definite patterns in life, and I would call that "fate." An acorn is fated, if it develops, to become an oak tree. An acorn, try as it might, cannot develop into a human being, or a fish, or a skyscraper. It is, therefore, "fated" to be an oak.

But there are infinite variations on that which is "oak." That's where chance, and fortune, and determination comes in.

EEEEEEeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmm! I'd call thet 'genetics' rather than 'fate'. Genetics is a 'program', whereas 'fate', um... isn't! But I DO see what you are saying!

Hey Sazerac!

i canīt help but to post this, but have you read the thesis that Chaos is all and nothing? More or less like goodlike worship or belief, that it is all around us, and yet not? Itīs a philosophical debate about Chaos. Because chaos is not pure anywhere cause in the center it is both all and absolutely nothing?

Just a little thought http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Yes I believe in fate. I also believe in faith. I also believe in the unexplainable because anything is possible with God.

Here is an example of how 'fate' worked in my life ~ if I hadn't joined Peace Corps and gone to Yemen, I would never have found and met dh. Yes he's American too, but he was from Syracuse NY while I was from Minnesota and we would NEVER have met without Peace Corps. That was fate. IMHO of course. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

Um. How about COINCIDENCE, Bilqis? http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...les/ponder.gif
Just a thought, of course, and only my opinion, but wouldn't FATE mean that every meeting we have, even in our own 'backyard', is meaningful and deliberate?
But you could just as easily have met someone else to share your life with in, say, Manhattan, or Nashville, or your hometown on a shopping trip, or wherever, and be every bit as certain it was Fate! (IMHO! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif)

Fate? To a certain extent, perhaps... but I also believe in free will, and we can capriciously change our fate with a choice. I think our fate may be destined if we follow a path, but we can always change the path, and thus, our fate.

But then again... looking ahead is never easy.

I do believe in fate, but only to a certain extent. I don't believe my entire life has been charted out for me. There has been way to many strange *coincidences* for me not to believe in fate. I've had to many of those I just happened to be there moments.
