OK everyone. Here's a new poll. If you had a choice whether to have lots of money, but being totally unhappy OR have happiness and just enough money to live on - WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE???? I personally would choose happiness over money any day, not that I wouldn't love to have a lot of money.

Money and happines go well together.

Dreamer128 05-14-2001 08:13 AM

In my case its pretty hard.
My dream is to travel around the globe and i won´t be completly happy till i´ve done it.
You see the dillema.

WOLFGIR 05-14-2001 08:23 AM

Well, I would like to simply say happy, but that would be a lie cause I´m not rich and I´m not happy. If i did have money i could get away from here and do things i like, i.e go visit alot of friends abroad, go to Canada for hunting and photographing bears, wolves and other things. To be able to more choose my way of living.

Unfortunately money is today a great part of happiness, unless you find somethng so much more than it. I.e a valued lifefriend, happiness in a philosophy/religion or marriage or something. Well, ok, sorry for being such a partypooper Lady Avalon. I can say this, if happiness that makes money and posessions inadequate, I do indeed want that more!

In today's world it is hard to seperate the two. I would go with Happiness and then redefine the word 'enough'. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Thanks to my darling Aggy, I am happy. Supportive parents - happy. Presently, I am struggling with the bills though (aiming for a better job at the moment) - would I change her/them for 50 million? Would I f**k - i'm happy (no pun intended) as i am

onthepequod 05-14-2001 07:12 PM

Within the confines of the question my answer would have to be....HAPPY. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif

SSJ4Sephiroth 05-14-2001 10:22 PM

I'll use the money to buy happiness

Lord Shield 05-16-2001 11:18 AM

We'd all choose that, but the question was money OR happiness. Pretend they're mutually exclusive

Lady Avalon 05-16-2001 01:51 PM

Thank you Lord Shield. Yes, that's the way I intended this thread. You can't choose both. One or the other, two choices.

.
Nicely put. Money is so fleeting too

catzenpewters 05-16-2001 05:55 PM

That's a tough one, eh? You could easily have money without any happiness, but in our society I find it hard to believe I could ever have happiness without some money. Still and all, assuming the possibility for the sake of the question...

Happiness, definitely.

I would have to say happiness. Happiness is not a big part of my life so it is something that I would love to have all of the time. Having just enough money to live on works for me.

OOHHHHboyohboyohboy. That's a tricky one. I don't have much money - barely enough to get by. But I am SO rich in comparison to most of the worlds population that wanting more just seems greedy. Which it is.
So, it has to be happinesss for me, too. And I am pretty happy, too. I live alone - except for the cat - and I can please myself what I do and when I do it. My family love me (and even come to visit!), I do lots of things I enjoy doing...
Yeah. I have to say I got it made! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I've actualy had the opportunity to make that choice.I had a job making good money (considering marital status, and geographic location at the time) and was offered another job for alot less money, but the opportunity to do what I really wanted to do. I took the job doing what I wanted that was 16 years ago and I have never looked back. It's not the high cost of living that gets you, it's the cost of living high (on the Hog).http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Hmmmm, although I'd love to be happy, I strive for monry, thats why i got an education and that's why I work, I know this is gonna make me sound like a money driven meizer, but, ill take money, feelings and emotions can be controlled, but money has to be earned !

Kind of a juxtaposition for me. I don't believe that I can have a load of money and be unhappy. Just wouldn't work for me...

I guess that I don't like people much...so it doesn't bother me. Me and my dogs would be just fine, thank you! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Conan 05-25-2001 04:08 PM

Lady Avalon, At times it seems like I had neither. Thinking that if I had one, the other would be close behind. Tieing the two together was wrong for me and I saw that. Happiness clearly is more important for me. Thank you, you seeker of truth.
Conan

Lady Avalon 05-25-2001 06:34 PM

You're welcome Conan. I guess it was a hard choice. Obviously most of us would like to have both. Just wanted to hear people's views on which they would choose.

This is a wonderful question... I look at a lot of clergy of all sorts who have given up worldly possessions for enlightenment. I have done the same (on more than one occasion) and am presently walking away from money now (and a damn comfortable life!) to once again seek happiness and spiritual journeys. My choice? I live it. For to have money without being happy is an empty life for me.

You're right Charean. I can certainly relate to what you are going through. I did the same thing nine years ago and I have never wanted to turn back. I could have had money and security and not had to work, but I chose not to, for various reasons.

There is a quote that goes:
"The person who said 'you can't by happiness' obviously never went starving."

Lack of money - poverty and destitution - causes extreme hardship and misery.
Money in itself doesn't bring happiness, but an easier survival can make life more bearable, and give a happier feeling can it not?

True happiness though, is IMO a perceptional choice. It is choosing to look at what you have, what you have experienced and who you are in a positive light rather than focussing on the negatives, that brings happiness.

A rich person can feel overworked, stressed, afraid of loosing what's been earned through stock crashes/theft, alone and unconnected or simply dissatisfied, in the same way a poor person can feel overworked, stressed, afraid of not earning enough to get by, alone, unconnected or disatisfied.

Am I right?

I'd choose happiness. Money without happiness would be like eating a meal you can't taste, or swimming in water you can't feel. It would be an empty gift wrapped box on christmas or a dry riverbed.
