my altime favorite is Orson Scott Card.
his greatest books are the ones about Ender. i'm sure somebody here know's what i'm talking about. my second fav. would be anne rice. i've read most of her work. i like a lot of others. but those are my favorite to read. ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/games3/slac...ges/golem1.gif http://www.angelfire.com/games3/slac...slackerboy.gif http://www.angelfire.com/games3/slac...ges/golem2.gif |
Not familiar with that Slackerboy but I'm glad someone started this topic up again. Got some great reading ideas from the old board.
My (partial) list: JRR Tolkien, TH White, Mary Stewart, Leon Uris, Dean Koontz, about half of Tom Clancy, Arthur Conan Doyle, Shakespeare, histories and historical novels, James Mitchner, EL Doctrow, and many others. I'll think some more and post back (if the exertion doesn't kill me). ------------------ http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...t1lg_opt60.gif - for cut rate prices call 976-BRIS-FOR-LESS {Next time I send some damned fool, I'll go myself...} |
I really like Elaine Cunningham and Bob Salvatore as for TSR writers. Outside of the DND mainstream I like Mickey Zucker Reichert, J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen Lawhead, Piers Anthony and Roger Zelazny.

|
Hmm, I would go with HP Lovecraft, Pär Lagerkvist, Salvatore (due to the stories), Robert Jordan (at his best) .. tough one..
------------------ http://www.najk.net/wolfgir/wolfie.gif WOLF WINS EVERY FIGHT BUT ONE, AND IN THAT ONE, HE DIES |
My favorite novelists include:
Christopher Fowler Stephen King Anne Rice Roddy Doyle Stephen Laws I like lots of others, but these are my favorite modern writers at the moment. Yes, most of it is horror! Personally I find good characterisation one of the most important factors to my enjoyment of a book. Stephen King is particularly good at creating 'real' characters that you can empathise with. I'm glad that in England he is now gaining some respect as a 'serious' writer - he was always viewed as pulp fiction before because of his subject matter which just shows how narrow minded some reviewers are. ------------------ http://www.gldb.com/wayno/epona2.gif Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so. Epona of The Laughing Hyenas and The Ladies Guild. |
... CS Lewis, Howard Fast, Kenneth Roberts, Terry Pratchett, Ray Bradbury, Scott Turow, John Grisham, William Faulkner, F Scott Fitzgerald, Shelby Foote, Robert Ludlum, Alexander Dumas, Victor Hugo, Charles Dickens and Anonymous (man, that person is rather prolific).

Raymond E. Fiest, David Eddings...
I like Dickens for the masterfully created interlinking Plots. I can't really name that many authors though, because I haven't read that much (unfortunately). Sir Arther Conan Doyle is pretty good too. I also read a great thought provoking book by Philip Pullman called "Northern Lights", and its sequellion "The Subtle Knife" ------------------ http://kung_lao.tripod.com/1.gif "Watch your back" - Sylent Master Thief of the OHF |
HP Lovecraft
Robin Hobb MR James JRR Tolkien Joseph Conrad Mervyn Peak Jules Verne ------------------ "It hurts us,it hurts us.It freezes,it bites!" |
Pleased Gollum enjoyed Peake, it was a tragedy he died before he completed the 3rd book. Fritz Leiber, M. Moorcock. Poul Anderson, Elaine Cunningham, R.E.Howard, enjoyed Troy Denning and Jack Vance.

Definitely Anne McCaffrey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Ray Bradbury, Diane Mott Davidson, Mercedes Lackey, Terry Pratchett, Elizabeth George, Dick Francis, Lindsey Davis, Sharan Newman, Barbara Delinsky... loads more. As for the previous comment regarding MZB and literature, what's literature anyway? I can't stand reading Hemingway, and Dickens himself can be a bit unreadable at times. I read what I like.

my favorite authors are:
Piers Anthony Robert Asprin Stuart Woods Michael A. Stackpole Peter David Johnathan Kellerman Stephen King etc.... ------------------ http://hclark50.tripod.com/Gothic_Flame_Stand.gif http://hclark50.tripod.com/title.gif http://hclark50.tripod.com/Gothic_Flame_Stand.gif |
Most of the stuff I've read is sci-fi fantasy so that's where all my favourite authors come from- Michael A stackpole and Timothy Zahn for their Star Wars stuff.
R.A Salvatore. How he keeps pumping out the great books amazes me. The Dark Elf books and the cleric quintet were both really good. William King for his slayer book series. If you want to read about complex characters and a killer fighter, read them. |
Humour: Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett (more amusing than laugh out loud), Louis de Bernieres, 'Private Eye' (paper).
Autobiog: Jung Chang (Wild Swans - great book) Serious: Joseph Heller (falls in humour as well), Aldous Huxley, Laurie Lee Favorite Author ever: Tolkien (because I enjoyed reading his books as much now as when I was about 10). (plus many others - these are just the ones I can remember) [This message has been edited by Staralfur (edited 04-10-2001).] |

Robert Asprin~LOVED the "Myth" Series!
Piers Anthony Douglas Adams Who wrote "Tales From The Vulgar Unicorn"? I loved the series that it started! Gosh that was so long ago! Slackerboy, My son is a big fan of Orson Scott Card and read and re-read the Ender's Series. They were probably the only books in his massive collection that I never got around to reading. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif Moni http://members.aol.com/lasttrueprincess/images/ltp4.gif |
Let's see Moni, Tales from the Vulgar Unicorn was by lots of authors I seem to remember - hmm, swivels computer chair and gazes at overladen 2nd bookcase - Hah, deftly plucks a volume - authors are various, but edited by Asprin - you got some Phillip Jose Farmer, Lynn Abbey, van Vogt, Andrew Offutt (always loved his Hanse character) - looks like I only have 3 of them as well (volumes 2, 4 and 5) - better rectify that now that I know my set is incomplete). Think I will take one for the plane (if the Liveship book gets a bit hard to stick with) - thanks Mon.
