I'm curious as to how everyone made their way here to our little (well, not-so-little!) net community, and I'm sure Z is too http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
I'd just bought BG1 and was actually just looking for a site with a walkthrough. I found Ironworks, thought it was cool, then found the BG1 forum. Then the BG2 forum started and that was history! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif What about you guys? ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/genwalk.gif Memnoch - Custodian of the Order of the Holy Flame http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/fire3.gif |
Well, i had played both BG1, Planescape, IWD and just bought BG2 and was surfing around for tips and walkthroughs, had heard it mentioned about a "XP-cap remover" and stumbled on to Ironworks, and by mistake I pressed the "Forum" button cause I thought it was something else, sometimes that page loads damn slow with a modem. Well inside I well looked around t the forum nd read alot of helpful things about the game and i though that I might get back there some day. A couple of days later I saw new threads and well I thought that I might try it out, I´m no fan of forums relly I´m not, but this was something else in my opinion, a board with good information with people that shared my interests. At first I felt like a fool, never knew what bump or anything was, i rember my first posting hehe and well i bumped it rather early and memnoch was the first on to reply to me. "Don´t you think it is a little too early to bump just yet?" and a reply, boy did i feel stupid, well that feeling hasn´t left yet http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif hehe, but well know this is like a second home..

Pure luck !
I was bored that day at work (beginning of December 2000), so I launched my favourite Copernic search engine and made a search for "Baldur's Gate II" ... and I got a HUGE heap of URLs. So I just closed my eyes and pointed my mouse at random on the list and clicked ! And I ended in the Ironworks home page. So I had a look at the page, and then saw "Forum". Thought in my head "Go see or not ? Nay, I know how all those forums are, just a bunch of male teenagers talking boring stuff like 'Is this sword +4 better that that sword +3 but with special powers ?'" As if ennemies would just sit and have a cup of tea waiting for you to choose the best weapon ! But I was still bored, so .. I clicked ! I was amazed at how many replies the topics got, but stayed a lurker for some time - until some guy asked "Hey ! Are we playing BGII by fear of real life?". I SO did not agree, I replied ... That guy was Yorick, BTW. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif ------------------ http://user.tninet.se/~csx358e/mbpix...ketches005.JPG |
I must say again how I was moved by all the hugs I got from you guys back when I had my car crash last January. Thank you, thank you, thank you ! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
You know, generally I am very sentimentally attached to objects, and I had had that car for 5 years, but I don't regret it at all ! I mean, I wouldn't exchange all the friendship from this Board for having my old car back again. ------------------ http://user.tninet.se/~csx358e/mbpix...ketches005.JPG |
I also stumbled in here by accident as I ws just looking for something cool to read on BGI. I went to the other related sites option and found my haven!! I believe I was looking for some sorta download or screensaver for BGI, and ended up joining the OHF!

Surfing the Web for hints to BGII, accidently clicked on forum. Saw the title Memnoch, recognized it as something I knew, but not where. So I clicked on the thread. Lurked for a month, then Moiraine's accident back in January made me want to add my thoughts, and the rest is history.

Moiraine: great to see you up and posting again ! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
My own story is rather short and boring: BGI was my first ever CRPG, so consequently BG II is my second. I don't no anybody else who plays CRPGs, so when I stumbled onto the Ironworks site - don't remember what I was looking for - and then onto the old board I was first interested in ontopic stuff, not so much about getting information I could use but more on another perspective on things I had thought about so much. Even though I was at first mostly interested in ontopic stuff I shared Moiraine's resentment of boards populated by male teenagers "being way cool". Since I had never entered a board before, in my case that notion was not based on experience, but on prejudice and stereotypes - for what a pleasant surprise I was in ! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif I kept lurking for about a month, then shortly before Xmas I took the dive... So this is basically one of my best Xmas presents ever - thanks everyone ! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif ------------------ So long ! A friend of mine told me about it, so nothing remarkable there...

A friend who had bg2 and convinced me to try told me where to find the walkthru on ironworks, the walkthru lacked what I needed and I went to the forum, and the rest, as they say was history. When I asked my first question, I checked back in about 10 minutes, not thinking i would have anything. Blew me away!
Memnoch, Armiseal, and someone else who did not translate over or has left (aplogies for the omission) had already answered my question, and even given the answer to the question the answer would have naturally spawned. I was very impressed. I lurked for a while, asking the occaisonal q, and checked out the 'official' site and some others. They fared very poorly in comparison with the people here, and as I am above all a people person, this place soon became my home away from home. I had bought Baldurs Gate two and, like Memnoch, was looking for a walkthrough or hints section to help me with a problem. NO WALKTHROUGHS EXISTED then, much to my horror, and so went on the Ironworks forum (I had visited Ironworks for the BG1 and IWD hints/walkthroughs before.) in the hope that someone could help.
As I couldn't log in as a user I couldn't ask questions so I had to go through pages and pages of threads to find questions that related to my searches. I got spoiled once or twice but persevered. After some time I started reading the offtopic conversations and found a thread asking who was Australian on the board. I was astounded by the number, including vocal members such as Armisael and Memnoch. Totally shattered my U.S. only perception previously held. I saw the first big crash (after Armisael dropped 150 premade posts all at once) the after effects of the 'big bugger', but couldn't contribute. Then one day I tried a fourth email address and hey ho I was in! I remember that question Moiraine! It was something to the effect of "Do you play BG2 like you are in life." The thing that hooked me was when Moiraine mentioned her family playing BG together, and her husband and her playing side by side. (I'd seen a thread about that weeks before when I couldn't post, and was amazed by how many married folks were on.) This time I was able to respond. My ex-wife used to give me a lot of crap for playing CRPGs so I felt a large pang of regret when I heard of those that played together. Moiraine and I had had a great yak, and despite an Armisael reply of "I never knew you were such a bleeding heart Yorick", I was in. I was able to send his words back when HE responded to a Moiraine post with a gush of his own BTW http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-.../1orglaugh.gif ------------------ FAIR DINKUM! |
Yes, Yorick, I remember Armisael's post, it was about Chuckles (the Jester in the Ultima games). He said that he loved that guy, even if he always ended up killing him ! Not surprising, since Chuckles has a kind of Aussie humour (involving a lot of funny insulting, as I recall) ! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif
So it seems that we both hooked the other one into this forum, eh ? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif Hey, Sylent, no offense to you, I hope ? I didn't mean the teenagers on this Board - you are all nice people (how is it going, Bahamut, ?). I was thinking back to my early experiences in playing PnP RPGs - I had always been an oddity, being a girl, and besides, what I have always hated the most are the never ending discussions about this item being better than that item, while I was sitting there waiting for us to PLAY AT LAST ! Hence my bit of ranting. ------------------ http://user.tninet.se/~csx358e/mbpix...ketches005.JPG [This message has been edited by Moiraine (edited 03-13-2001).] |

I had been looking for a new D&D CRPG to buy so I went on to the TSR site, found BG2 read up on it. I went and bought the game, then went to the BG2 home page. I wanted some clarification about spells, weapons, walkthrough etc. I saw this site called Ironworks, cool name I thought, and stumbled on to the forum.
I Lurked(theres that word again) for a while. I thought, wow this looks to be a great place, I'll have to come up with a name. That took a couple days, all the cool names where taken. The next thing I did was try to sneak in, I was pleasantly surprised when I received all the welcomes. I became part of the forum family and that was great!! Thanks, everyone for making me fell warm and fuzzy all over. ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/rpg/wildleprechaun/merlin.gif Feel My Power Arcane Adept of the OHF, "So let it be written, So let it be done" |
I had starting playing BG1 last fall after quitting EverQuest. I was looking for help/hints and ended up at Ironworks by following their link from the Planet Baldur's Gate website. I was impressed at how helpful folks were here! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
I frequent two other forums (Lum the Mad and EverQuest), but this one is the friendliest. |
Easy, I have been playing BG since it came out and when BGII came out I needed help with walkthroughs and item customizations. Ironworks was the best site and still is for CRPG information.

I had just about to finnish the underdark in BG 2 when Adolan(the silver dragon) got mad at me for failing to get her eggs. Well I finaly just killed her but with out her help I couldn't find the exit. so I thought I would look for help online. I did a search with altavista and it took me her. It was Memnoch who got me out of there. Thanks Memnoch

Hi Memnoch,
Yes, I always got timed out when I used it with my home modem connection, but at work (LAN connection) it took a lot of time but actually worked. And when it didn't, I looked in the 10 previous pages, and always found the answer I needed ! ------------------ http://user.tninet.se/~csx358e/mbpix...ketches005.JPG |
Drake, don't worry, the server hosting your GIF must be down, it happens, but it will come back later. Maybe it is just rebooting right now.

Some of you remember me from the old days on the old forum. I was gone for quite some time and only recently returned. Heh, luckily for me I came back when I did, since the old forum was shut down shortly after my return.

I was after hints for BGI, so had been going to the Ironworks site quite frequently.
I had never even looked at a forum before, so never bothered to click on the link. Then one day I found my mouse pointer hovering over that link, thinking, "I wonder what this is?". And so I clicked. This was ages ago, and one of the first threads I came across was a certain Evil Smiting Paladin, who seemed to have dropped some gum under his CAPS_LOCK key. I read, enthralled by the mad world which I had entered. I was hooked from that moment on, returning regularly to lurk, guilty voyeurism I admit. Always looking, never posting. Then, one fine day, I saw a query with no replies, and thought "I know the answer to that". So I signed up (as Frejya) and tried my best to answer the query, posting twice in the thread. But ALAS! Although I had included the magic incantation "SPOILER" at the top of my reply, I did not realise that the board would compress my carefully placed blank lines, thus leaving no gap between the warning and the spoil. I was aware of the chastisement meted out to Those Who Sinned by Spoiling, and so I slunk off to consider my crime. But pretty soon I returned, with a better thought out nickname which I still use today. I still try to answer as many queries as I can, but a little spam never hurt anyone either! (Unless you aim a can of it at someone's head, that is). ------------------ http://www.gldb.com/wayno/epona2.gif Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so. |
I was looking for a good BG2 forum to ask for help, and found this great forum.

The only roleplay-game I had played was Wizardry 7.
I was too lazy to read the manual andlearn about the game so I ended up here where everybody is really friendly and helpful. |
I think i was just looking for portraits or something... and i found the ironworks. Then i entered the forum, and as i wanted to ask a pair of questions i logged in. That was more than one year ago...

I was bored outta my skull. I was working a night shift from 10PM - 8AM and getting no calls. I jumped on the internet and decided to see if I could find some help for BGII (Nalia's keep) about those infernal trolls. Well, I did a search and found a link at http://www.baldursgate.com I figured that if the site was actually called that, it hadda have something about the game there. Well, I went to it and didn't really find much help at the time (The game hadn't been out very long, maybe a week or two.) I saw this post by someone called Jerome, Tipsy, and Asphyxiate (pardon my spelling if I messed it up, going by memory here). Jerome and Tipsy were getting into it and then Asphyxiate jumped in too. I thought it was all cool fun so I tried to jump in too. Nobody knew who I was though, but they didn't flame me or anything (mainly just kind of ignored me). It was still really cool though. I stopped posting for a couple of weeks (maybe over a month, not sure), then I saw there were a few posts not getting answered. Well, I jumped in and answered where I could. Figured I didn't want other newcomers to feel like I had when I first got there. Been here ever since. RL has called me a couple of times, but I've found my way back. I'm basically a part-timer now though.

BG was my first CRPG as well. I knew nothing about D&D, AD&D or RPGs. I did a general search for tips and thought this site was visually cool. As I mentioned on the old board, I was more than a little apprehensive as I expected to find the joint inhabited by a bunch o' code crunching geeks who thought these games WERE life.
Have I been pleasantly surprised. It was some of the goofy off topic stuff that got me posting and I thoroughly enjoy the interaction here. I just wish we could get together for real time chat.
