884mb .... LOWEST PRESSURE EVER RECORDED. SUPER HURRICANE. HISTORY IN THE MAKING RIGHT NOW. ASTONISHING !!!!
That is amazing... And it looks to be headed for south Florida. (I am in central Florida and may get the top part of it--not as bad) So if we are down Friday through Tuesday or one of those days in between, its because of this Hurricane coming. It's ALREADY a cat 5--and a record breaking one (yet again). The planets weather is changing guys. something is very wrong with it.. :( If this storm jogs more north, we're gonna shut down, and evacuate with Choc. And wrap all the PCs in trash bags and hope all is ok. We don't live near the coast, but last year, 1000's of trees and roofs were messed up. And that was a cat 3 or 2.. we are 60 miles inland.. safe from 80% of the damaging winds, but they CAN spawn Tornados. Keep an eye to this Forum for the latest updates. |
O sheesh, will it ever end ?
|
Blimey Z, hope you come through it ok. This was not even a category 3 last night (british time) but they said it might feed from this warm stream overnight. It must really be growing fast to hit a category so quickly 5 :(

Looks like in 24 hours it went from a cat 1 to cat 5. Going to keep a eye on this one. Batten down the hatches. Good Idea Z about packing up and getting out.

Wow, there really have been a large number of hurricanes and storms this year! Take care, Dan, and get out if it looks bad! We don't want a tree falling on you, Donna or Choc!

Come on up, Ziroc. We have a place for you, the wife and of course the forum's iconic cat.

A friend of mine who is a bit of a crackpot, but otherwise a nice guy who researches alot believes the east/west poles are reversing and will be swapping with the north/south in a relatively (on a planetary scale) short time. (If I recall correctly he described the bermuda triangle as the East pole, and the Devil's Sea off the coast of Japan as the west pole)

The weather there sounds to have been more insane than usual lately. Thanks to the ancestors I live far from the coast and wind and America. Has there been a noticable increase in the number of doomsday prophets yet? If a comet can spawn them surely this can.
|
Damn, those hurricanes never give up, do they? I wish good luck to anyone who might be living in an area where this hurricane might strike.

3 of these in 7 weeks. When these are sometimes once in a lifetime events. Amazing. The planets weather is changing. |
Lowest pressure recorded in the Atlantic Basin... the lowest pressure ever recorded for a storm was Typhoon Tip at 870mb.

How does a low pressure count effect the storms behaviour, by the way? Does it make it stronger or more destructive, or is it just another figure? |
There is some correlation between central pressure and hurricane strength, although this doesn't always hold true. The lower the central pressure, the stronger the high-pressure winds around the eye wall rush in to equalize the pressure difference. The true source of all hurricane strength, though, is water temperature; the warmer the water the more heat and energy the hurricane absorbs.
Hurricanes generally release anywhere from 5 megatons to 20 megatons (or more) of energy each minute! I was discussing elsewhere back during Katrina about some people who thought that detonating nuclear devices to diffuse a hurricane's strength. We would have to fire all our nuclear weapons at only one hurricane and maybe--just maybe--we could do something to it. But probably not...except to heat up the water even more and create a category 6. [ 10-19-2005, 07:05 PM: Message edited by: Azred ] |
Maybe the planet has decided it's had enough of the human race and is taking steps to cure the disease as it were.
This seems to be a bad year for hurricanes. My cousin had to evacuate from her place in Florida again because of it. But hurricane season should be over pretty soon, right? |
Gilbert was a vertiable lightweight at 888mb. ;)
