Just a thought I figured I'd toss out to yall.

I never used to be able to get out of a dream, or even realize I was dreaming in a dream. But sometimes I do now. It's like sometimes I just realize I'm dreaming and my mind refuses to deal with anything that may be violent towards me, and I'm able to get away/thwart it, move onto another dream, etc.

I'm a big dreamer in that I know I dream frequently every night, and remember most of them to a certain extent. Maybe it's because of gaming so much, or what I choose to watch on TV, but I do have nightmares often, always seems I'm running from something LOL. So for me being able to recognize a dream and being able to either manipulate it, or get out of it, is something I could find quite handy LOL.

A few weeks ago in my quest to do this, was early morning hours, I'm dreaming. To make a long story short I was talking in my dream to some woman in a room, we were disagreeing about something, I cannot remember what it was. I was getting frustrated trying to get my point across, and all of the sudden I realized I was dreaming, and I decided to take it one step further LOL, and I made myself look at the woman and say outloud in the dream "I know how to end this. Because I'm DREAMING". And wham!!!!! I woke right up with a big start and damn it hurt my head too, felt like somebody konked my brain for a minute there. Was weird LOL, but it worked. :D

Can any of you tell you are dreaming in a dream sometimes? Be interested to see if anyone else has any stories re that.

Well I know no to try that lol.
But you have a talent there, I can't wake myself up from a dream, usually I only remember all the bad dreams that i have which is kind of scary because I don't want to remember them.
Anyways maybe because you told your brain to stop dreaming all of a sudden, maybe all the chemicals weren't balanced to wake you up properly so you had a big head spin.

I know that if my mum tries to wake me up really early in the morning to do something, I can never remember it unless she tells me about it later in the day.

Sir Goulum 08-01-2005 09:24 PM

Wow, I wish I could do that. My dreams are so bland right now, but I can never tell that I am dreaming.

shadowhound 08-01-2005 09:30 PM

I can usually tell when I am dreaming and wake up at will, always thought that was normal lol

Jaradu 08-01-2005 09:59 PM

Happened once, but I didn't take the opportunity to manipulate the dream or anything. In fact, later on, I forgot that I had realised it was a dream altogether and went back to thinking it was real.

But there is this very peculiar thing that happens to me about once a month while dreaming. While slowly drifting off - not exactly sleeping, but a similar state of mind - I can see nothing but a void. Sometimes a black void, sometimes a white void, heck, I've even experienced an orange void before (with a curious transparent rabbit hole in the middle, I may add ). After a few seconds of looking into this void, I hear a violent sound; for example an earthquake or a drill, followed by the most horrendous pain - a really sharp, stinging pain - either on my leg or arm. The pain is so intense that it wakes me up... and then back in my room I can still feel the ongoing pain for many seconds (despite the fact I'm wide awake), as if someone had stabbed me in the leg in my sleep and vanished. I mean, where the hell did this pain come from? Does my brain cause artificial pain to my body as a defense system to wake me up? (Well, that's my theory anyway )

Heh, I sometimes know when I'm dreaming... usually it's when the dream is just incredibly nice, like still being with a girl who left me or that I'm being extremely sucessfull in life... then I find myself thinking, hey this is too unreal, too good to be true, must be a dream... and ofcourse I wake up then from the dream...

Firestormalpha 08-01-2005 10:23 PM

Strangely I can always tell when I'm dreaming. But I never have the desire to end a dream. Not that I don't have frightening or odd dreams, but I like to see things through to the end.

Now I have woken up from dreams that I would rather have stayed within for a little while longer.
It's really fun when you're goin along in your dream and then in the background you here it. Buzz Buzz Buzz Buzz Buzz. You're alarm is going off and you hear it in your dream. You wake up and it's still there.

Most common way I can tell I'm dreaming? A large amount of my dreams occur in the 3rd person view point. Like I'm watching myself on TV, but I'm still fully in control of myself.

Hey for those of you who can wake up from dreams.. Have you ever tried continuing it? (as in waking up and then fell asleep afterwards and you contiuned, like a "savegame" and then "loadgame") I tried and it works for some of my dreams but not all... As for me, forcefully waking up from a dream always take me a lot of effort.. not like "Hmm.. I don't like this dream.. I am waking up now" and poof you are awake...

I used to be able to do that. Now, sleep comes after more of a fight and doesn't last long enough for me to have that many dreams. But yeah, lucid dreaming is very interesting. It can even be used as a vehicle for astral projection... Most interesting stuff, indeed. Someday I'll start getting more sleep and experiment with it.

Kakero 08-02-2005 01:19 AM

I know that I'm dreaming and sometimes I can even control it. Like changing something to make the dream more likeable. I never really had a nightmare, if something is bothering me I just kamehameha the problem, eg dead people, flying coffin, unmanned black cars etc. ( yeah, I've watch too many dragonball :D ).

However, I notice something strange in my dreams. When I was still schooling I'm so afraid of floating/flying in the air. I've also afraid of going near water ( rivers, sea ). Now after graduating from U I can float so far up in the sky and the height didn't scare me. I can even dive into water and swim there. WOW!

Aelia Jusa 08-02-2005 03:23 AM

Yes, when I'm dreaming in the early morning (which is most mornings), I am aware of what I'm dreaming and that I am dreaming. Occasionally I can make decisions 'consciously' but I can't make myself wake up.

Pop 'n Fresh 08-02-2005 07:44 AM

:( I dream like once every 5 months. My standard nightime is fall asleep, 3 seconds later it's the morning.

Iron Greasel 08-02-2005 09:03 AM

I'm pretty certain that I dream. I just can't remember it after thirty seconds of being awake. I really should start writing the little buggers down.

Cloudbringer 08-02-2005 09:25 AM

My dreams are usally fairly weird! LOL I don't have bad/nightmare dreams too often but they usually tend to wake me pretty quickly anyway. Still I'd love to be able to do that, LZ, just say 'that's it, I'm outta this dream!' and bam, wake up! Without the klonked head feeling, though! :D

Drakilor 08-02-2005 02:53 PM

I don´t remember my dreams very often (it comes in periods wheter its often or not), but when i do it´s not too unusually that i´m aware of that i´m dreaming. And if i´m aware i can control, mostly flying etc, but i did create a fryingpan out of nowhere once (try it).
And one time in a nightmare i could just press shift+esc to get out of there .

I´m not fond of waking myself though since it takes some time and can be uncomfortable. It happens e.g that my eyes are wide open and i can see the wall in my room but are still dreaming, like half-awake, and its a struggle to move a finger.

And i tested the pinch-theory, i didn´t feel anything. :D

Ivelliis 08-02-2005 04:35 PM

I only sometimes remember my dreams, other times I remember in the morning for 5 minutes, forget and cannot remember ever again.
My dreams rarely make sense, like one time I was driving a truck with my grandad mother and sister and we went in a fish and chips shop (even though I had just ate a burger in my dream) and it was raining, then we went outside and I played football with people in my year (and none of them were my close friends either). It was weird, that's the only dream I've remembered for ages.

I do this all the time, but when I continue the dream it's never as "realistic." Of course, that's because I know it's a dream by then, and that makes it less enjoyable if it's a good dream. If it's a nightmare, I usually kill everything, lol.

And I have the same thing as FSA, I see myself in the third person, but have control. Strange, huh?

Aelia Jusa 08-02-2005 05:17 PM

Sometimes when I'm dreaming I'll be aware of it and know that whatever I'm dreaming about is going to have a certain climactic moment, so I'll be eagerly anticipating it, but then my dream will never quite manage to get me to that particular point. It's very frustrating!

Duagloth Duskryn 08-02-2005 05:34 PM

Hmm, sometimes i can remember what I`ve dreamed, but only for about 5-10 min. than I`ve already forgotten it*g*

but while I`m sleeping i can manipulate my dreams a bit, not always but sometimes.

Winter Wolf 08-03-2005 04:42 AM

Most of the time my dreams are better than life. Of course I also have dreams that the majority of people would consider nightmares. I think that it can only be a nightmare if you're truly afraid, and my weird dreams just don't scare me. Dreams of being in massive crypts, being chased by vampires and skeletons, dreams of falling into the blackest pit only to wind up in an even deeper crypt, dreams of giant lizards guarding forbidden gates, dreams of being hunted by fuzzy green scorpion-things with swirly red eyes that would infect you with a moss disease, dreams of wandering in peat bogs covered with heavy fog, dreams of killing things (self defense mind you). I like these dreams, and I have no fear. They pretty well could never happen in my real life.

The dreams I hate are the prophetic ones. I've had numerous dreams of things that would happen to me later on in life (usually a month to a couple years after the dream), but it's never something like winning lotto numbers, it's always bad stuff: g/f breaking up with me, THE MAN audits my taxes, things like that. These are my nightmares. I might not remember after a while, but when I'm in a real situation and I get that sinking feeling in my stomach, I suddenly recall with clarity the dream. Never exactly the same as life, but the important stuff is still the same. Now if only I could harness this power for evil.... I mean good....

I remember a lot of my dreams, and I recall a dream from when I was in sixth grade with clarity to this day. That dream was more than 20 years ago (lizard guarding gate dream).

Q'alooaith 08-03-2005 04:07 PM

I pretty much know when I'm dreaming all the time, my body is diffrent, or non exsistant sometimes, in other words I only ever see myself in my nightmares, and that's only very rarely that I'm in my own body even then.

I can wake myself up from my dreams/nightmares, got a couple of ways I can do so, I just tell my body to wake up, I increase my heartrate and breathing. It's a little scary because everything goes black when I wakeup, I'm not able to open my eye's for a few seconds, the rest of my body takes more time. Untill I get control back I'm limp and totaly defenceless.

Then the other way, I will my body into action, sitting up is normaly enough, I hit my head off the wall and I'm wide awake, in full control. It's kinda painfull so I avoide it.

LOL, I'm going to endeavor to create a frying pan in my dreams LOL. Not sure if I'll ever be able to actually do it, but if I remember this thread enough and the remembrance of it pops into my head during a dream, it could be possible LOL! :D

Cloudbringer 08-04-2005 10:31 AM

Ok, we'll take a poll on how long before you get a frying pan in your dream, Wendy!

I had a dream last night about Ashton Kutcher being a microboilogist, and saved the world from a smallpox terrorism attack :D I knew I was dreaming, but up until a few hours ago, I thought Ashton Kutcher was smart :D :D
