Thinking about getting one and wondered what your guys' thoughts were about it. I wanted my name in Norse runes above a valknot ( I'm Āsatru). I was just wondering about the pain factor and thoughts about location, etc.

It feels like rubbing sandpaper into your skin, REALLY HARD. But think about what makes it painful. Its like getting alot of shots, but the needle is solid, and doesn't go so deep.

johnny 07-28-2005 03:48 AM

Of course the tattoo artist could be drunk or high on something, use a dirty needle or whatever it was that made the tattoo on my friend's arm rot and partly dissapear.

Ah well....anyway...good luck. :D

robertthebard 07-28-2005 05:34 AM

Johnny is right, you have to be sure to choose your artist carefully. People that are recommended to you by friends are cool, but check out his shop, some of his work, talk to people that have ink by him, and see what it looks like, a month later, better yet, a year later.
Another thing to remember is that a tattoo is an open wound, and must be taken care of accordingly. Sometimes, problems that result from a tattoo are the fault of the person getting it, not the person doing it. Good luck with it.

Duagloth Duskryn 07-28-2005 05:51 AM

How big will it be? Is it important that you can see it?

A popular location is the neck or the upper arm(be sure that your muscles dont become bigger/smaller so that your skin is strechted)

But why dont you try first a fake tatoo? so you can see how it will look like and you dont have to keep it till you die;)

Jani 07-28-2005 07:17 AM

I have a tattoo that covers most of my right arm. It doesnīt hurt that much to take. The firs 5 minutes are uncomfortable and after that the skin goes quite dump. Mine took 4 hours and was done in 2 parts (2x2hours). Itīs been about 5 years now and most of the time I donīt even remember I have it. If I have a meeting at work with a client then I just put on a shirt that covers it. No biggie.

And take all above advices seriously. Just donīt be Johnnys friend and you`ll do just fine=D

Winter Wolf 07-28-2005 08:08 AM

I'm sure you've heard this lots of times, but tattoos are *permanent*. You can get them removed but it leaves a scar. Just be sure you're going to be happy with in 10 years, or even 20. And don't get it just because it's cool, it should have some meaning for you. But I did read your post, and it seems it does have meaning for you, so cheers. Wherever you put it, make sure it's someplace that can be covered, just in case you end up in a job where they really frown on body art. I'd say upper arm is a good location. Obvious when you want it to be, and as Jani says, you can cover it up if need be.

As to pain, probably won't hurt much as long as the artist doesn't hit a nerve cluster. Got a shot (worlds apart I know) and the nurse stuck it in a nerve cluster, the spasm broke the needle off in my arm.

Illumina Drathiran'ar 07-28-2005 10:13 AM

In addition to that, if pain is a concern, you should just avoid bones. The ankle and the middle of the back come to mind... these places HURT.

Hivetyrant 07-28-2005 06:35 PM

Yup, anywhere where the distance between the skin and te bone is small will hurt more, its only in some places that you can't feel it, in fact when I was getting mine in some places it was like a relaxing vibrating pen on my back.... Then he would go over the shoulder bone.... And that hurts..

If you want the truth, imagine getting an injection...Not so bad, then imagine them dragging the needle along your skin while its still in...
So yeah, it can be pretty painfull, it just depends on where you want it, I dont think it hurts all that much on your arm, but I have mine over my back and the spine and the shoulder blades were the painfull parts.

I also heard that the lower back (where alot of girls seem to get them) hurts like a bitch, but I ave a very high tolerance for pain so it didn't bother me, and if the design is simple it wont take that long.

johnny 07-28-2005 06:44 PM

I knew this guy once that had the name of the local footballclub tattood on his forhead, that must have hurt i think. Not to mention the Londoner that worked with us on the Heineken breweries, he had a parrot tattood on top of his head, it covered his skull completely. The thought alone of sticking needles in my head makes me sick.

Iron Greasel 07-29-2005 01:42 AM

Your ass doesn't have too many bones and it's concealed most of the time.

Link 07-29-2005 05:56 AM

Don't have tattoo, seriously thought about getting one, though. I don't think I will ever get anything, and if I do, it will be something small on either my arm or my ankle. Something like that.

Words, words, words. All words and no photos make [insert name here] a dull [insert gender here].

I'll leave that up to your imagination. Shouldn't take much to figure it out!

Charlie 07-30-2005 10:26 AM

If you have to have words written into a tattoo, make sure they are correctly spelled out for the tattooist before work commences.

My mate had a very fancy tattoo done the day after Elvis Presley died. The guy got the dates right but the tattoo to this very day reads -

R.I.P
EVLIS

DrowArchmage 07-30-2005 02:43 PM

i have a tatoo. its a panther,it looks like its trying to come out of my arm, its claws ripping through, with his head.

Bozos of Bones 07-30-2005 03:02 PM

I just remembered something I had, so I decided to share with ya.
Make sure that this doesn't happen.

Q'alooaith 07-30-2005 05:52 PM

Whatever you do, do not get a girlfriend/boyfriend's name permenetly imbedded in your flesh, you never know what the future holds.

You can get them lasered off these days, but it's far more painfull than getting the tattoo done, and can take ten, to twenty times as long to remove, and some parts may take more, or be virtualy impossible to remove.

And leaves a scar far worse than the original tattoo, I've seen more than a few removals....burnt, scarred flesh never looks too good regardless of the hype...trust me.

Q'alooaith 07-30-2005 06:56 PM

YMMV, some people get it done and sing the praises.

Would you rather have a tattoo saying something you no longer belive in, something that everytime you look at it fills you with anger and sadness.

YMMV??? OMG, WTF?

Doubtless you're right. Doubtless too in my mind they were pretty insignificant tattoos and said people were happier with the scar than the tattoo. Fair play to them.

Bloody clever trick if the tattoo is on your back! No, I'd rather have the original tattoo covered by a new tattoo more to my later day taste. As would, in hindsight, quite a few of my mates who have actually had laser tattoo removal. You've obviously only read about it.

Yeah, Most people wish they could be like me :D

Vaskez 07-31-2005 09:07 PM

But your rap battle record's still got 0 wins :D So no I don't really wanna be like you. Plus you eat balls and I'd rather my curly hair stayed downstairs and didn't spread to my head :D :D sorry, j/k homie :D

For your entertainment, my latest verse against a guy called Mel Tingpoint who's in some crew called Pitch Black: (look out for wordplay)

Rap skill's spread through RB ever since real MCs joined
'N their skill's hot...shame it never reached MelTing Point
Mel's wackness was joint, with an aim to rap till his dying breath
And if he was hungry for success, today he must be starving to death
A large gap exists between Mel and quality rap, he'll never cross
We'd explain rap, but Mel's wack n' we'd never get the Point across
Too many dicks on RB wanna floss, I wish wackasses'd join less
We know who's the best; a dope MCs list'll always be Pointless
Your rap's a mess, I ain't even worried about your attack
Cos even when ya bring all ya fire, all we see is Pitch Black

:D

Ok. All words and no photos make Mr. Mopery a dull male.

And you shouldn't choose Random photos, you should insert photos of yourself :D

Hope I get this right this time...

But then again I did pony up a couple photos, didn't I? I don't see anything but words coming from you... :D

Horsimus 08-02-2005 04:46 AM

The lovely little design on hivetyrant's back also adorns mine and was drawn for me by an ex-girlfriend.

However, while his parents are cool with it, mine stays very well hidden.

By the way, for the pain factor - if you really want to know, get someone to drag a ball point pen hard across the area you're thinking of getting it. That pretty much sums up how it feels.

And if someone wants to tell me how to put on a photo, i will show you all how it looks cooler on my back than hivetyrants. :D

DrowArchmage 08-02-2005 07:55 PM

In order for something to be gained, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemys most simple law. But i feel that it applys here too.

How so?

DrowArchmage 08-02-2005 09:22 PM

For you to get a Tatoo removed you must turn healthy skin into a terribly scarred pice of flesh.
