I'm helping to organise my school's graduation dinner, and I chose the role of techie and roadie. However, I have now discovered that this puts me in charge of the music for the evening. I like my music... but noone else does ;)

So I was wondering if anyone has any playlists for discoes, parties etc. Preferably quite a bit of hip hop, techno and some good headbanging stuff.

Basically, anything you can dance to.

A list of songs, (I'm pretty sure you can copy paste from winamp) would be great... for me to go and download. And when I say download I do *of course* mean that I would purchase them through Itunes or etc... out of the school's budget.

So yeah... that'd be great Otherwise I gotta sit down and listen to enough Hip Hop and dance to get three hours of music out of it.

Callum 06-05-2005 10:57 AM

Wow... these songs all add up.

I got 6 hours of music already.

Now I need some head bangers, and a couple of slow songs.

And some rave/techno stuff, I suppose... it seems to be popular right now (bleh!).

Kynaeus 06-05-2005 11:43 AM

What do you count as headbanger songs? Just some examples would be cool

Kynaeus 06-05-2005 11:57 AM

I've got my whole long list of dance music and then my entire library, but I have a feeling someone would not be very happy if I just pasted all the tracks in :D Where can I upload the files for you guys to view?

But maybe:
Starlight- Superman Lovers
Romeo - Basement Jaxx
Who's That Girl - Eve/Gwen Stefani
Holla Back Girl -Gwen Stefani
19-2000 (Soulchild Remix) - Gorillaz
This Love - Maroon 5
Roses- Outkast
Locked Up - Akon
Where's Your head at- Basement Jaxx
Outta Control - 50 Cent

Slow Songs :

Rendezvous - Craig David
Lovers and Friends -Lil John/Usher/Ludacris
Something About Us (Love Theme from Interstella 5555) - Daft Punk
Wanna Get To Know You - G Unit
Don't Gotta Go Home - DMX/Monica
Just a lil' bit - 50 Cent
You Should Let Me Love You- Mario Winnas

Dilemma - Nelly/Kelly Rowland (told you about this one already, but it's the king of slow songs around these parts :D )
She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5
Girls,Girls,Girls- Jay-Z
Lonely - Akon

As for techno, I've got loads of good stuff. But I don't know what any of the songs are called! :D

Mm... This sounds strange, but don't knock it... Don't be afraid to mix things up. I was recently at a masquerade ball (seriously) and while people were more or less dancing the entire time, the floor was only packed when they did songs like the Time Warp or Paradise by the Dashboard Light or even a swing song or two... Keep that sort of thing in mind. People seem to have the most fun dancing to songs like that.

Grojlach 06-05-2005 03:38 PM

Just a few suggestions to balance out the ridiculous amount of hiphop so far... I know some youngsters are perfectly fine with such a one-sided musical input during their graduation dinner, but you should try to cater to other people's needs as well, no? Else you'll get some seriously alienated and out-of-place kids there. Also, skip 90% of all the lyric heavy gangster rap songs with gritty beats and simply focus on the cleaner party anthems with mainstream appeal (Black Eyed Peas, Usher, etc); you don't need a dozen Snoop Dogg or 50 cent songs in 3 hours time, or that many hiphop songs for that matter. That would please maybe 3 people and seriously piss off the rest.

Note that I have to add the disclaimer that I have no idea what kids in Malaysia really like, though. This also isn't really a list of what I personally like best (though it would be the greatest high school party I never had ;) ), but I'll try to approach the issue from a 17-year-old's perspective.

some songs that will cater to a wider audience:
Alcazar - Crying at the Discotheque
The Go! Team - Bottle Rocket
Junior Senior - Move your Feet
Save Ferris - Come on Eileen (or the original by Dexy's Midnight Runners)
Pizzicato Five - Twiggy Twiggy/Twiggy vs James Bond (or just "twiggy", but make sure you get a 4-minute-ish version)
Pierre Henry - Psyche Rock (also theme from Futurama, btw, so this will mostly work if it is shown over there)
Suba - Samba do Gringo Paulista
Suba - Samba do Gringo Paulista (zero db reconstruction)
De-Phazz - Jeunesse Doree
Koop - Summer Sun
Marco Valle - Batacuda Sergiu
Moloko - Sing it Back (Boris Dlugosch Radio Mix)
Madness - Embarrassment
Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hell
Brian Setzer Orchestra - Jump Jive & Wail
Jive Bunny & The Mastermixer - Swing the Mood
Bran Van 3000 - Astounded
Planet Funk - Chase the Sun
Love Connection - The Bomb
Franz Ferdinand - Take me out
Kaiser Chiefs - I predict a Riot
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
Blur - Song 2 (this one might not fit the mood, though)
Faithless - Insomnia

And some bonus electroclash songs, that will cater to both dancers and headbangers alike (though perhaps not really fit for such an occasion):
Vitalic - My Friend Dario
Felix da Housecat - Watching Cars Go By
Felix da Housecat - Silver Screen (Shower Scene)
Vive la Fete - Noir Desir
Soulwax - NY Excuse

Hey, I was just suggesting the stuff my friends and myself enjoy listening to, I wasn't expecting him to use EVERY song. :D

I did say my dance/party collection was hip-hop orientated.

And finally, some good old-fashioned rock n' roll - with slow stuff mixed in.

http://www.freewebs.com/gambihulen/rock.html

Figured 800 tracks would be pushing it for cut n' paste.

Callum 06-06-2005 02:55 AM

Well... Sigmar's music took me up to 4 hours... so I'll be cutting out at least half.

I'm thinking about a ratio of 2 hip hop to 1 techno to 1 headbanging... Which means about 20 - 25 hip hop songs, and 10 - 15 of each of the others.

And upon thinking about it... I really only need a couple of slow songs all evening. This function is notorious for people not dancing, so a slow song will just push people further away from the floor, if they aren't already dancing.

And by headbanging... I mean stuff like Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit, SoaD - Toxicity, Chop Suey, Puddle of Mudd - She Hates Me. But I can probably cover those ones myself. :D

Mixing up all kinds of other stuff won't really work. If it was for my and my friends, I would do it... But the year above us (who are the one's graduating... so its their party really) seem to have the worst collective taste of any year in the school. They only like the same stuff that's always playing on the radio. I'll get yelled at if I put in anything too different or "fun".

Dude, those people suck. And for someone who prides himself for having a great Internet connection, you could still download some of our suggestions, no?
Also, mixing Puddle of Mudd with 50 cents all within 3 hours time is an aural disaster which will still piss people off. I know you can't please everyone, but the least you could do is try to find something universal that no one actually detests. What's so wrong about 'fun' music to dance to? Now you're still putting people in different camps rather than trying to unite them... Unless you're really afraid those 50 cent types will beat you up if you play ska or swing music. ;)

And Froberg, nice list! Contains some stuff I really need to check out, especially the electronics list. Though I fear it's not really the kind of music fit for the average 17/18-year-old.

Lord, fantastic list matey!

A better selection to dance to than mine overall, no doubt (considering the fact that I've danced to each of those some time or another in clubx here in Gib).

As for Headbanger suggestions Callum (a few of my friends like "music with rocks in it" too so I usually have to incoporate a great deal of rock into the playlist too ;) ) :

Undercover - Pete Yorn (a bit tame, but to ease people into the rock I think it works well).

Maroon 5's mainstream appeal can't be emmphasised enough- "This love" and "She will be love" are great.

Rock Star - Smash Mouth (Feel good, dancing rock, canny get better than this :D )

How You Remind Me- Nicklback

Burning Down The House- Tom Jones & The Cardigans (Cheesy, but it's universally loved :D )

Mama told me not to come - Tom Jones & Stereophonics (less of a sure hit than Burning down the house)

Feeling This - Blink 182

Wonderwall (slow rock song) - Oasis (one of the favourites, 50 drunk men and women singing the chorus in unison, it doesn't get much better than this :D )

Bodyrock - Moby

Take Me To The Clouds Above - [someone] VS U2 remix :D

Laura - Scissor Sisters

Teenage Dirtbag - Wheetus

[NOT ROCK, but two fun song to throw in regardless :D ] Bootylicious - Destiny's Child [and] No Doubt - Hey Baby

Bohemian Like You- The Dandy Warhols

Again, I hope that helped. The rock can't be too heavy, as it has the same effect as getting really slow rap songs, with boring monotonous beats, etc it'll put a lot of people off. Try and go for a mainstream balance...and at the end of the day...just get anything with a nice lil' backbeat to it! :D

Apparently the definition of headbanging over here is very different from else where ;)

How on earth do you head bang to Wonderwall or How you Remind Me?

Anyway... I just had to walk all the way home from a Japanese lesson, so I spent the time doing mental math. ('Cos I'm just that cool)

So, my estimates seem to keep coming down for the number of songs needed.

What I really need now is a top twenty hip hop songs list, and a top ten electronica list. Headbanging I'll do myself. Slow songs are already covered. ;)

Realistically, you're not going to put heavy rock music like, oh I dunno..."Cowboys From Hell" - Pantera 'cos like "heavy" rap music it'll appeal to a very small niche of your audience :D

That's as heavy as mainstream rock gets, you want people to get funky and dance. Not start a mosh pit :D

thanks Sigmar.

Also add:

Diamonds are Forever by Kanye West (this beat will get people moving)
Whats My Age Again by Blink-182 (i don't think i've ever heard this in a club before, so i'm not sure if it would work out)
let's get it started by black eyed peas
Git Up by D-12 featuring Eminem
Headsprung by LL Cool J

I'm trying to think of 1 more slow song to dance to, although I can't get 1 to pop in my head atm.

[Switch - Will Smith] has also been a big hit lately.

Slow song Lord? How about [Only You-Ashanti]?

That one seems very popular too.
